Due to start a new job in April, so I'm going to need a small car to, 1) do the commute from Norfolk to London at the start and end of the week, and 2) to do the weekly to and fro from where I'm staying in london to my work. So I'm going to need something not as big or as thristy as the supra. Here's the kicker though I am looking to spend under £1000. Dont really care if its sporty or not just need something to munch miles and is fairly cheap. Suggestions please guys and girls........

i have a 53 plate 1.7turbo deisel astra that i use for work. I do about 140miles a day and have had it for 2 years hardly any problems and its cained hard to be honest.

If you are going to get either a corsa or astra then make sure it has the isuzu engine in it as they are much better

Corsa. My bro runs one alongside his zed, its cost him virtually nothing over the 5 years he's owned it (53plate 1.7TD), he never services it and its done 180k. Sure, its a shed, but its surprisingly nippy and very cheap to run.

I owned a Corsa once while my main car was having an engine transplant... worst car I had ever driven.

Is that your answer to everything Michael?

Smiffy, how about an old Passat? I am off to shop for you now.

Good suggestion!

I bought mine for £1k with 120k on the clock, had it 3 years and it never once went wrong, wasnt fast with 110hp but it was very comfy to waft around in and had a huge boot and loads of room with the added bonus of doing near 600 miles to a tank on motorway runs.

Sold it to a friend who still has it, its now on its way to 180k and the only thing that has broken is a passenger electric window lol.

I really miss that car.

Ive got a Skoda Octavia, eBay special. 1.9tdi, epic fuel economy, comfy and quiet.

Actually, although an Corsa diesel with the Isuzu engine would be my number one choice, what Swampy has suggested is also a very good call. One of our contracting Engineers has one of these and it seems great. He paid a few quid and had it chipped and now returns better MPG and it goes like stink too. Because they are marketed in so many different countries and climates apparently the mapping is a one fits all type of thing and therefore a bit of a compromise. Don't know if that's true, but it ssems to have done wonders to his car.

It's true of all cars, but particularly diesels. A remap of a diesel will almost always give better mpg and performance.

Have I ever mentioned I've have an 1997 Astra 1.7tdi?

No?

I have an Astra 1997 Astra 1.7tdi

£700

50mpg... no matter what you do to the accelerator pedal.

Bob's your Uncle.

Fanny's your Aunt.

Or get a Corsa.

Sound advice. Same engine as the corsa too.

Ah good spot bud!!! will give him a buzz tomorrow. My mate had a mondeo diesel which has been bomb proof. Thanks for looking mate!

I looked at a couple of others but they were all slightly more expensive. Passat/Mondeo/Golf/Focus is the way I would go. Nothing French or Italian unless you love the hard shoulder?
