fastcar
So I have decided it is time to change my career and have been looking into I.T. After seeing an advert on the web for National IT Learning centre i had a look through there website and took a test for there online profiler to see which career path would suit me best in I.T. And after talking to a nice lady on the phone it seems that i am best suited for Database Administrator which i am very interested in. So has anyone on this site or anyone that you might know of used National IT leaning centre to get the training they needed to start a career in I.T? If so what did you think of them? And how has it helped you?
The-Plethora
I'm in IT and I would take someone with skills over pure qualifications any day. If you are just coming into this line of things and assuming you know the windows basics I would look into studying in your own time and going for one of the Microsoft courses like the MCP (or up to date equivilent). If you are happy to take your time and look up on the web, buy the book containing example questions etc you can get by with about £80 on books and just paying for the exam. All that as opposed to the £5000+ an organised classroom affair.
Purity14
What type of salary are you after? And what skills do you possess at present?
caseys
Good luck in your endeavor imho Most days compared to even 10 years ago trainee IT jobs are extinct in this country, at least the ones worthwhile taking in the sectors worthwhile practicing them in. Most entry level/junior level jobs are farmed out off-shore nowadays akin to call-centre work. And as Plethora said, experience over qualifications. The graduates nowadays doing 'Business IT' degrees are... interesting! Probably better off looking for trainee/helpdesk work in IT at an SMB to get your foot in the door then try and move internally. What sort of database were they considering? DB2? CICS/Adabas? SQL/noSQL? Also what are you looking to get out of a career in IT? If it's not a passion/interest, you may not like the hours/politics that are probably in it and also some jobs are just dead-end career wise. I ask as I entered IT with no relevant IT certification (bar a-levels) and no experience and started as a trainee mainframe operator after numerous interviews and aptitude tests.
