hogmaw
Anyone have one? We want to get one installed in our house but there is zero useful info and no independent reviews out there, just loads of companies all saying their product is the best. Salt or magnet? Or chelation? All advice welcome
j_jza80
The magnetic ones AREN'T softeners, they're scale inhibitors. It (apparently) stops the scale from clinging to your heater elements, brassware etc. A water softener requires salt, they're expensive to buy and run but do make a huge difference to the quality of your water. They're rarely a necessity in the UK, only in the worst hard water areas can they be considered a necessity. LIFF make the best water treatment products in my experience
dandan
Good question - I've just started having a casual look around for a softener kit. First step is a hardness test but I'm certain mine is pretty bad as things scale up very quickly.

hogmaw
Here you go guys; http://www.culligan.ca/Default.aspx?rdr=true&LangType=4105 Thanks for the link but there are many others just like this, all claiming to be the best, and none of them putting their prices online. Why don't they show their prices? I'm always suspicious of companies that have something to hide.
JamieP
Good ones are expensive and on the large side, cheap ones reduce the water pressure to much.
hogmaw
So not so much a rip off as you get what you pay for then... £1500 I don't think I will bother!
Dim Sum
It's its only worth installing one if a member of family has some kind of skin disorder like eczema.
