JasonR24
Hi, I havent had my supra long but have just recently found there is a loud knocking from the rear. I suspect the rear differential as it is coming from the rear left and is quite loud. It is not the exhaust banging. I so not know what else it could be so does anyone have any ideas. Also if it was to go while I was driving how hard would it be to control? Thanks
nige-rz
Describe when you hear the noise mate. Is it when going over bumps or just general driving? If you put the car on full lock does it get worse? Have you ruled out something simple like bushings?
JasonR24
Seems to be worse under acceleration and when turning tight. But I have only just noticed it really. It seems worse over bumps though. I'll have to test it out more but I am worried it might go while driving. The noise is like loud banging from the rear left. At first I suspected the exhaust was getting worse but I had a look at all is fine.....
nige-rz
Just drive sensibly until you know precisely what is wrong and you'll be fine. Avoid hard acceleration or testing the limits of grip through the corners until its all fixed. SIMPLES . As the noise is specific to one side I doubt it's diff related. Jack the car up at the back and check for excessive play in the rear suspension. I'd hazard a guess that its either suspension bushings or somethings broken. JasonR24
Ok cheers, I just worried it was the diff because I read about other people having the same symptoms and that was the problem also because the diff bushings are a common problem. I shocks are yellow so I'm presuming they are after Market? Definitely JDM tho as they are plastered with japenese writing. It really is quite loud and worrying but I'll take it easy and jack it up 2moro, if I can't diagnose it then it's off to the garage :-( bad times! thanks for the help I really appreciate it. seba
Lol a mate of mine has just the same problem since a couple of days check this thread out http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?262474-Hard-knocking-from-the-rear If you figured out what it is let me know please so i can tell him what to look for first ! Good luck.
Robzki
The yellow shocks are probably oem bilsteins I had a similar noise that turned out to be a knackered shock.
fastcar
I would go with the knackerd shock. The internal valves get worn and start to make a knocking noise from what I understand. That's where I would start anyways
Dnk
Shock blown, broken spring, loose wheel nuts, drive shaft cv joint, brake caliper, suspension bushes/ball joints, subframe, drop links etc Edited January 30, 2012 by Dnk (see edit history)
Robzki
If I had to narrow it down I'd say it was one of the items that Dnk said.
JasonR24
Just taken into a garage as it developed and got worse. I'm now sure it is brake related as this is only when it happens now.. There I'd a loud clunk and then grinding. Luckily once it had gotten so bad I had pulled over right outside the garage! What brake related things could it be? Or could it still be the diff as the wheels are trying to stop? so lost..... Already paid out 110 quid for electrics behind dash last week! Within the first 2 weeks of supra owner ship :-( please tell me things get easier lol
Dnk
Any decent mechanic once its on a ramp shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to find whats wrong by the sound of it. Seized caliper would be my first guess if its making a grinding noise and stopping the wheel from turning

JasonR24
Just wanted to let everyone know what the problem was as I got the car back today! It was a missing bolt for the brake caliper... It must have shaken loose and I didn't even notice. So yea all that drama was 1 missing bolt. Thanks for the ideas tho guys!

Not torqued up enough if at all would be more likely.
JasonR24
Well they have just recently been fitted all new brakes with braided hoses. Presumably if you're right that's why?
Dnk
If they are fitted correctly then this wouldn't of happend, i think i'd be checking the rest as thats a pretty poor error to make by who ever fitted them.
