Bubbling noise when removing oil filler cap

A problem on the Aristo but hopefully the engine is similar enough for an answer from you guys.

Is it normal for there to be a bubbling noise coming from the "rocker box" (correct name eludes name at the moment) when you remove the filler cap?

The oil was on the low side but I filled it to the dipstick mid level point and the bubbling noise was still there.

I have never heard this before and neither of the oil warning lights have come on at all.

The car seem to run OK.

What could be the possible problem, is it because the engine was cold or am I worried about nothing and it is normal?

Had to scoot of to work, so didn't have a chance to check it again when the engine was fully warm.

Thanks for any help.

b;3302750']Have you checked the coolant level?

(just as a step towards ruling out the engine getting way to hot and starting to 'boil' the engine oil)

Coolant appreared to be OK and I was running the engine cold when I took off the filler cap.

This might sound silly but could this not be trapped air escaping due to the oil getting low. Plus is it a wise idea to run the engine with the oil cap off?

Yep thats pretty silly Mike :D and it shouldn't be a problem running it with the cap off, obviously

while the cars stationary :)

Wish I understood more about cars than I actually do.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I wish I knew more about flying a jumbo jet, but I don't, so I don't do it!

Somebody who knows a little bit about cars is often worse than somebody that knows nothing at all. My sister let her boyfriends mate mess about with her Impreza. I've now rebuilt it.

Also, what's the reason for running the car with the oil cap off? Under normal driving conditions the cap's screwed on so surely, unless you're diagnosing something like a crankcase breathing fault, there's no reason to do this?

I wasn't actually running the car with the oil cap off, I was just checking the state of gunge on the underside of the cap. That is when I noticed the bubbling type of noise.

I may have to start another thread on the gearbox issue. That problem is getting worse.
