Old landies

the more I read about landies the more they seem totally unsuitable!!!

I need a vehicle for the following:

-Daily commuting/run around

-Capable of off road (mud, rutted tracks, ground clearance, hills etc)

-Possible towing

-Ability to throw muddy stuff/dogs etc in back with no worries

-Reasonable running costs (fuel, servicing, repairs etc)

-Old as I don't have 50k to spank on something brand new!!

So any suggestions as to what my other options are? :(

well were do i start :sly: been working on landrovers for sometime now. good fun if you like getting your hands dirty, as they always leak oil from hub seals/crankseals/transferbox seals. clutch cyclinders leak.etc. not slagging them off but be warned.

now for the newer ones td5 engines. we have a fleet of these at work. and all of them suffer bore wash ( diesel)

I was just about to say much the same......

One of my mates is actually a time served Land Rover / Range Rover mechanic. Has been there for 9 years and says he wouldnt have one as a gift ! :innocent:

He says that almost EVERY one he sees be it for work or a routine service needs something replacing almost all of the time, and never cheap. He also said that the Diesels are ridiculous prices to maintain as he sees most of the quotes and job cards.

Just doesnt recommend one for a daily driver at all, unless you live on a farm, or have deep pockets. Very heavy on fuel too. Diesel or Petrol.

Thats from a Landie Mechanic ! In fact his actual words when i told him about this thread were........... "No No No No NOOOOO!" lol

Another friend of mine from up here, bought a 2 year old one 8 weeks ago.........its gone already..........said it was horrendous on fuel.

They're great for all these. The only vehicle that I drive with a permanant grin on my face. They're great for forcing your way through traffic as well.

Old Skool turbodiesel Range Rover. Cheap as chips to buy and ok to maintain and are big luvverly barges. 30mpg too, on a good day - to me that is good economy :D No big 4x4 will do much better to be honest.

Find attached another fun landie, although a little impractical for day-to-day usage. Twelve bloody quid that cost to fix btw. Twelve bloody quid. Makes me cry when he tells me the prices for parts.
