W58 gearbox

I have seen many w58's handle 350bhp & 350ft lb without problems. If your going to use the soarer v8, I always thought that was 280bhp stock NA. Parry is currently running about 425bhp through his TT lump on his w58 box and has yet to have any issues.

A good condition box should handle it without any problem. If you have problems with your box before the conversion, then it may not make a difference it may still fail. A box can fail through abuse and poor service combined with constant drag racing with slick tyres.

Jekyl ran his w58 on 500bhp for a little while without any issues, though 3rd gear eventually failed.

Wouldn't bother doing that. it's like buying a new engine to replace one thats not broke.

Replacing internal gearbox components isn't worth the hassle if the components haven't failed, and aren't being uprated. Wait for it to fail. Unless you already have a gearbox problem of course.

If it current drives and feels fine, then replacing components is money down the drain. You don't know if the gearbox will fail, so why swap bits :) Save your money for a decent clutch and lightweight flywheel.

I'd hazard a guess that most manual 1UZs (certainly those in Australian Soarers :)) use the W58.

IIRC, early Soarer V8s are c. 255bhp, later ones are a little more, around 260, and the VVTi engines are 290ish.

It's academic though, because you are unlikely to find anything other than the early version, and you probably want an early early version (pre '93?) because the rods are stronger.

Ive broken 3 w58's and push just over 400hp but do drive mine hard, problem if they normally strip the inputshaft and layshaft and from what ive read its not down to worn bearing just pure power.

Take a read of this site there is alot of interesting reads all about the W58 box.

I believe that to be a coded message, should read 'of course it will be fine Neil, if it blows I will buy you a new box'

I'm signing nothing! It 'should' be ok. I don't know what your box has been through though.... Just to be safe so I am not liable, it may blow up though.
