stevie_b
This could be several problems at once (the shutting down thing being one problem, and the internet being another) or it could be a single virus causing both issues. As Scott said, try doing a forced shutdown. If that works, you could try starting the laptop in safe mode to see if it's any better. As for the internet problem, how do you connect to the internet? i.e. is it via a router? If so, try logging on to the router and see if 1) you can access it normally, and 2) see if the router is connecting properly to your ISP. You could also try opening a command prompt and pinging a well-known coprorate website such as "www.bbc.co.uk".

Abz
just one more guys ,had a call from the fella he has sorted the connection problem it was the ethernet port , so hes put in another one and it works , but the machine is still restarting itself after the shutdown prompt, could it be a windows problem? peter richards
yes all my icons on the screen now work , but when you select shutdown , initially it does this screen goes blank , then you hear the fan kick back in and it restarts
imi
When it restarts does it restart into windows normally or do you see a message suggesting that the machine had crashed.
peter richards
normal back to the position before shutdown was selected , if you hold the start button on the front of the machine it then shutsdown and doesnt restart
imi
normal back to the position before shutdown was selected , if you hold the start button on the front of the machine it then shutsdown and doesnt restart if you hold that button it will not gracefully shut down the operating system and it is not recommended. It is only used as a last resort. imi
