Netflix

Yeah a couple of years ago when I was off for xmas just running a few laptops (youtube ect) xbox live and me streaming films we went through 24gb in 11days. They should all be unlimited to save the agro but the main problem can be getting a good download speed and a monthly price when you don't want a phone to be connected and just want the internet on it's own as most are bundled towards calls internet and sky tv.

The package we were on was £22 per month and included phone line with free evening and weekend calls, 10mb broadband (actual 10mb, not up to) and the basic TV package from Virgin. I recently upgraded to 30mb broadband and I'm now paying £28 for 6 months which will then rise to £32.

Not too shabby considering. Basically I now have all the multimedia I could ever want for less than £40 :D

I can't even remember what mine costs now as I called bt got a free new hub (been with them years) and for about 6months it cost me nothing, I think I have the free weekend calls but as I had to move back home I don't need the agro of others using the phone to make calls as I would be saddled with the bill so don't bother with the calls at all plus I have a contract mobile anyway. I think mine now comes to £35 unlimited internet including the phone line connection rental but I split that with my old dear so for the benefit of internet any when I want it it is well worth the money £18 over being bored. I always find if you have been with them a while just phone up and negotiate a better deal although it will normally mean you having a contract with them for x ammount of time.

I've had the top love film package for ages now - I find the discs I get in the post just sit around for months and don't get watched because sky and my 2TB media box are much more convenient than me or the mrs. getting off our assess to select / find discs, put them in the right device lol.

If anything we use the streaming service most but find it's usually lacking in stuff we want to see and sometimes have buffering issues. How does Netflix compare in this area? I'm on a 5.5MB ADSL connection as confirmed via my router admin.

Also, wasn't Netflix the one Apple paired up with so Apple TV2 made a lot of sense in the US and would make more sense here once Netflix launched? If so, it's strengthening the case for yet another device under my telly as I was almost justifying it to myself for Airplay Mirroring from my iPad2.

I wish SKY would just get with the program and make box office subscription based for an extra £5 / month instead of still trying to rip everyone off at £4 a pop for a film - they're really missing a trick with that service.

Sooo... Might ditch Lovefilm in favour of Netflix and might purchase an Apple TV2 depending on the replies!

Cheers,

Brian.

Correct, up to now the U.K version didn't have the option to use it. It's a great little gadget, I bought mine for the bedroom after my sky box packed up so I could stream movies from my mac to my TV.

Does/will Netflix show the latest releases? I don't understand why Apple would make a device that lets you rent movies from ITunes, and now let's you watch movies from Netflix

I would recommend trying it Brian. It's free for a month, but even if you don't use it much it's £6 for the 2nd month... to get a feel for it. It's obviously not going to be for everyone. I have over 1000 movies on my mediacentre but I love the way this works, it shows the front covers of the movies and makes for a VERY easy selection of what you fancy watching.

The front end of it is perfect for me and the choices in it are decent considering it's really just starting to take shape in the guise it's in at the moment. Once the titles start to fill in it's going to be awesome. My main worry is that the price will go nuts. I would happily pay double for the service that is being offered at the moment though so I'm one very happy camper.

It's definitely not going to be for everyone though. I turned off the facebook notifications last night so there really are no drawbacks from the free trial.

I was tempted but I heard you will realistically need a very good broadband connection to enjoy the HD Movies... My connection suffers if 2 people watch Youtube in HD so I dont think I qualify :(

Definitely, I wouldn't say it needs to be "very good" though. I had a 10mb connection which as far as I am concerned is very much the norm nowadays. I currently have a 30mb connection so have no issues at all with any streaming options.

I still struggle with youtube though, that's more to do with youtube than my internet provider though. YT is very popular and at certain times it can be difficult to get the necessary bandwidth from their services..... just in case you are getting the 2 issues mixed up :)

Ahh... I have around 10MB here do (9200kbps down) but youtube stuggles sometimes (does not help when I have a telly with built in Youtube viewer I guess). Haven't really tried anything else and I am tempted to try out Netflix now I have a HTPC setup in my living room...

If you hit decent speeds with a network speed test (speedtest.net) then you will be absolutely fine.

No problems there then IMO.

Same here - signed up last night after cancelling lovefilm. Streaming is excellent even on my pretty poor 5.5MB connection and as Scott said, I find the front end really easy to use to find what you wanna watch. Very impressed, just hope the service doesn't decrease in time performance wise with a massive influx of subscribers as is looking likely.

Interestingly, the cancellation process with lovefilm revealed a new £4.99 / month 'no discs' unlimited streaming only package - a sure response to the threat of Netflix.

Amazon must be wondering if they can afford to buy Netflix right about now.

Yup can almost guarantee that is a retaliation from love film. I would be happy to go with them for £5 a month, I just felt their prices were over inflated for what you were getting in their main packages.

I'm not so sure on the Netflix worth as it's just breaking into the UK as far as I know, it's HUGE in the US so it would definitely cost Amazon a pretty penny. For us I can only see this as a good think as if they have the infrastructure and know-how to supply the US without any major problems then it should be good news for us.

Okay signed up, watched some old films which came out in terrible quality, though new films are fine.

Easy to use, luckily I have fibre, seems to stream well.

Which old films did you try Abz? I watched mothman prophecies last night and it was very good considering it's not HD. Also tried out Dirty Dancing (for the Wife) and it has an HD version of that. Most of the things I have tried have been in HD. The only one that was crap quality was April Fools, the quality is OK considering the age and quality of the original film but the picture is about half the size of the screen for some reason.

Been using Netflix for a couple of years. It is a fantastic service and never let me down with the quality of streaming. Been using lovefilm streaming for sometime. Only problem is some of the films on both lovefilm and on netflix are only available on DVDs. Not available for streaming. And some of the content is only available in some countries. But between Netflix, Lovefilm and Zune streaming I am mostly sorted.

Years? From what I've read it's a relatively new service in the UK, just breaking in from the US.
