Chris Wilson Posted January 14, 2012 Share Posted January 14, 2012 If it's blown the gasket out it will need a skim and a new gasket. if the gasket is intact and the studs are wrong for the thickness of the flange you MIGHT get away with thick washers under the nuts and re torquing it, but ideally it wants skimming flat. When I said thin, I meant a bit thinner than the stock cast manifolds, so the stud grip lengths may be inappropriate. Morpheus Posted January 14, 2012 Share Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) I'd expect more of a 'hissing phap' if it's coming from the header flange to block gasket as the note is too deep and reverberant. It's as likely the lower downpipe to straight union in the 3rd and 4th pics, since there are only two bolts and it really should have three. Also, they're oriented 90 degrees out, so any bending forces will open a gap at the bottom, esp. when it warms up and expands. Ed. actually, it does sound very phappy and it's the note from the exit that threw me. I'd replace the gaskets with steel ringed ones if they aren't already, so they can't blow and have more bite. The flat pressed ones with no re-enforcing rings will compress over time and obviously loosen. No amount of bolt tightening will seal if the flange bends and you might find that the tighter you torque them, the less it seals, as you're bending the flange more. neo2810 Posted January 19, 2012 Author Share Posted January 19, 2012 So, I've just got the car back from my local, and it's purring like a kitten on steroids again. The problem was the manifold. It had been manufactured slightly out of alignment so was putting stress on the join till eventually it popped out of place. The garage have seam welded it to correct the problem so it's sorted but I'm surprised the specialists who put it in for me didn't get the measurements right, considering they are "nationally renowned". Granted I'm sure they would have corrected the problem under warranty had I given them the chance but it was easier to let my local do the fix for a small charge than book my car in with them, as they usually have a couple of weeks waiting list.
