neo2810
Driving home from work tonight, near the end of the journey, my engine started sounding like a sick V8. Got home and it got worse and then quietened down in a bad way. I've attached a couple of sound clips to give you a chance to utter your doomsday predictions while I start looking at car adverts... JamieP
Sounds like the exhaust is shot?
neil tt
Sounds like it has blown a hose or something similiar, I hope at least for your sake, check the intercooler hoses
Scott
Definitely sounds like something has went in the exhaust side of things. If it had thrown a piston it would sound a LOT worse than that.
neo2810
It's dark but I've had a good look around the engine and can't find any loose hoses. Exhaust is fine. It and manifold are just about a year old and solid as a rock. Please god let it just be a loose hose I'm not seeing! Oh, both vids are up now

neo2810
Its the exhaust dude, trust me. Could well be Jamie. I'll have a better look in the light tomorrow. Cant see very well now.
Scott
Could well be Jamie. I'll have a better look in the light tomorrow. Cant see very well now. Check your manifold studs etc, if any of those go you will get a rumble. As Jamie said it definitely sounds like the exhaust end. Anything from the block to the exhaust itself could be blowing. Rob W
Same sort of thing happened to me and was sounding the same. Had a look around and where there use to be an egt probe in the no.6 runner, the blanking plug had come out. Its defo something blowing mate as stated above. Morpheus
Its the exhaust dude, trust me. Trust him Just listened with my iStethescope (iPhone headphones) and it sounds like one of your baffle boxes has a split seam. neo2810
Thanks guys... I've had a good look over with a strong torch and the rumble is coming from somewhere near the manifold (engine end) or block. The studs all look tight, the manifold looks spot on...... However.... there is some oil deposit behind and under the dizzy so could it be a blown gasket?
Morpheus
A blown exhaust gasket on the end of the downpipe perhaps at the exhaust manifold?
wile e coyote
Def sounds like the manifoild, Maybe cracked underneath, let it cool down then start it up and feel around for air
Graham1984
Mine sounded like that when the 1st cat had a massive split in it by the manifold.

Swampy442
As above, sounds like manifold gasket or an exhaust gasket very close to the manifold.
fastcar
+1 for exhaust if it was a piston it would sound much worse
Morpheus
+1 for exhaust if it was a piston it would sound much worse I still don't know how pistons ever came into it. Then again, I drove my car for a year without realising the sidelights were fog lights.
mellonman
with thinking you threw a piston, makes me wonder at what speed this happened
