FFS and WTF are fine as is using *'s in the middle of the word.

Our e-mail systems at work allows swearing to a degree cause they recognise that sometimes even in business profanities are required. (Quoting people word for word etc).

Lets all just try to remember our *'s and TLA's is just good internet manners. :)

I dont swear much and I dont think I have so far on this site but I dont think the people who do are doing it for the fun of it. It seems like a way of expressing themselves amongst friends etc. in times of difficulty and stress. Its hard to start deciding whats appropriate and whats not as each person will have their own view on what is at what time.

If you worry about your kids reading some swear words keep them away from the computer, like someone has already said they probably know newer words than you plus the growth of the net has probably got them viewing alot worse things than the obvious F word probably said alot by some parents infront of their kids!

To my mind there's absolutely no need to be throwing, for example, the "F" and "C" words around with such abandon. It displays a lack of ability to communicate properly and disrespects those people on the board who manage to post and comment without resorting to the four letter dictionary.

Discuss. :)

Why do you think there is any sort of connection between swearing and ability to communicate? Swear-words convey meaning, don't they? They must do, otherwise you wouldn't be complaining about their over-use.

If you were to suggest a connection between over-use of smilies (smileys?) and having an underdeveloped vocabulary, I think you might have a better argument.

Also, why is someone who chooses to swear 'disrespecting' others who don't?

All very odd.

If you read my original post you'll see that I said "communicate properly".

I appreciate that there are times when we all swear and that there may be times when there's a valid communication context for it, but there's clearly no need to swear just for the sake of it or, in my view, to insult someone. There's plenty of other less offensive, more subtle and perhaps more witty ways of insulting someone than simpy telling them to **** off.

Also, why is someone who chooses to swear 'disrespecting' others who don't?

Lack of courtesy pure and simple, in my view. If you can't hold a conversation on a BBS without typing in swear words then it shows, again in my view, that the person is not really concerned how they make their point That in turn is disrespectful to the people who take the time and trouble to post in a considered manner.

Who has told someone to F off? If someone has done this then the moderators should be onto this? Surely insulting someone is offensive and is not very curteous in any form of words or manner? The problem with BBS is that everyone has their own way of saying something and even that can be interpretted as sarcastic, offensive, know it all etc..

so, what if people are just messin about? like i have a lot of banter with people on here, people call people n*bheads etc. it that bein disrespectful etc?

That's where my point of a valid communication context applies. If everyone participating in the thread is aware that it is banter and the topic matter is conducive to it, then it is perhaps not necessarily being disrespectful to other members simply by the use of swear words per se. Of course, it would still be appropriate for a poster to self censor any swear words.

if a swear filter came in, as long as it wasn't a really strict one, i wouldn't mind. like some swear filters wouldn't let you type in the word "gun" FFS!

if we have a swear filter, can someone come up with a filter to get rid of "txt speak" as well :D and a filter for people who don't like capital letters, like me :D

Just out of curiosity why is there a need for a filter?

I think some people don't like reading swear words.. it upsets them. Another reason is that a lot of people here browse the site whilst at work, and the site is filtered and 'scored' by their web-filtering software. Any profanities might put the site in a questionable category with the filter, possibly blocking it, or at least logging the site for the IT guys to look at.

I had a rough idea and as I have already said I dont swear on this site (as yet - I think!) but you would have thought that people who come to BBS know that they are going to see these kind of words. I feel that its a case of stopping freedom of speech/typing just to satisfy the minority. I can understand from the work side as you could lose your job if the employer wants to be really funny and set an example. But where is it going to end? Anyhow, if people dont like to read it even with *'s in the word they still read it in there mind but I cant say that I have seen much in the way of full spelt swer words on this site. In fact, I think the manner of this site is quite nice - then again this is the first site that I have joined!

PS I'm not condoning swearing but it doesnt bother me either and when I come onto this site I expect to see a few words here and there.

I keep coming back to this analogy, think of this place like a pub. Theres small groups who know each other well and so are more open with their language, but if they are talking to people they dont know so well they wont use the same language (unless they are very, very drunk). I rarely swear either on the BBS or in general, however if I do swear I want the full meaning to be seen and not blanked out.

In a forum such as this there is generally no need for excessive swearing or even any at all. If somebody feels that swearing adds to the thread then there has to be a good reason for it, just throwing in f**k and c**t for the hell of it shouldnt happen and I would hope people understand that.
