Faye Brother
I am no prude by any stretch of the imagination but the level of unecessary profanity on this board seems to be increasing. To my mind there's absolutely no need to be throwing, for example, the "F" and "C" words around with such abandon. It displays a lack of ability to communicate properly and disrespects those people on the board who manage to post and comment without resorting to the four letter dictionary. Furthermore, it hardly presents the best image to those new to the site and is utterly inappropriate for young children and minors. Whilst I appreciate the latter are not necessarily the target audience, there are, I imagine, children who do read the board. If people really do not have the self control to stop typing swear words just for the sake of it, as it seems to me, then perhaps the only option is to impose a swear filter? Discuss. michael
The swear filter already exists, it's just not enabled. I'm not sure people are using profanity for the sake of it though, some people utilise it in their everyday banter so maybe that's what they are doing here. Personally I'd prefer to see some self filtering where people insert a '*' or something similar in order to reduce the impact of the word. This isn't because I don't want to read the words, it's because I don't want the proxy at work to read them and block the site. It's up to all of us to consider the impact of this and moderate ourselves accordingly.

Bill Prawn
I agree, there is no need for swearing on a public site. That's why we have smilies. If any wants to swear why write the word? We all know what f*** and s*** means. Now p*** off and do some work!!!!!
Supragal
We like to think that as adults people can control what they say, let alone what they type I've not been around much so haven't noticed but I'm sure JB will be along to administer a slap if he notices. tbourner
Auto-swear-filters are damn annoying though, you can't write "I come from Scunthorpe!" without it saying S****horpe!! Where the hell is that!!!
carl0s
I agree. There's no need for swearing among mature adults.

It's possible to set them up to prevent that kind of thing, the vBulletin one is pretty good, you can even use it to filter out txt spk and convert it back to English
JohnA
Some Vauxhall forums treat 'Ford' as a swear word (ho ho ho) So you type "can't afford" and comes out as "can't af*ord" or something. How stupid is that?
Branners
I have always taken the approach that people need to moderate their own language and so havent turned the swear filter on. I hadnt noticed it getting out of hand recently but will keep an eye out for it now. As in the past if people can think about what they are typing before posting and then we wont need to keep an eye on it JB
GeordieSteve
We had a swear filter at work YEARS ago an we lost out on a big multi million £ job because it was in Scunthorpe (come on think about it!). MD was not amused. I try to keep my swearing down and use *'s but I might slip now and again (sorry)
Heyrick
I have to agree with Fayes Brother. My children are always looking over my shoulder when I'm on the forum so it would be nice if some thought could be given to those influenced by swearing etc. Not sure how well filters would work - I just think we need to think of others and respect their feelings etc. etc. Even the abreviations (wtf, lmfao etc.) are quite annoying as you can't help filling in as you read even if you don't want to. And children do ask questions! Just be good if people used it a lot more sparingly I think.
JustGav
How about a swear filter option within the prefereances, so that it can be turned on and off according to user preferences... Keeps everyone happy *grin*

geoffvalenti
Whilst I agree that most times swearing is unnecessary, and at times tedious to read if it's every other word, as much as I'd like to protect children from the horrors of profanity, sadly I think that we're about 20 years too late. One has to only switch on the TV, or even radio these days, and its not long before a torrent of these words spew forth from the mouths of the actors, presenters etc. Come to that, stand outside a childrens playground, or ask the majority of children to politely refrain from scratching their name on the bonnet of your car, and you may even learn a few new words Swearing is all around us these days, words that I'd reserve for the garage, and even then only after repeatedly missing the nail and hitting my thumb with a hammer are now openly shouted across the street by young GIRLS It's not big, or clever, but unfortunately, it is part of the language that we call English. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone with my posts in the past, which, I'll admit have had some (disguised) swearwords in them, but in my defence, the words have all been used to stress a point rather than part of the normal language. To be honest, if you get offended by acronyms like FFS and WTF, I really think you ought to get out a bit more

SkyJawa
WTF FFS whats the matter with you bunch of f***ing whining b!tches I blame films. Especially the likes of Layer Cake, as the scripting (especially LC) was so over the top in profanity and not at all like real life it detracted from the film......... RedM
Maybe we could have some software that creates substitute words, like ITV do when films are edited. Stuff like Funky Melon-Farmer and Muddy Funsters.
Kopite
i swear quite a bit like a lot of other people but it's mainly in the banter unless i'm gettin pished off (i didn't swear then!). agreed that it's bad if kiddies etc are readin the board but i wouldn't make too much of a fuss about it - they're exposed to much worse stuff everywhere else anyway. Like "bitch" used to be classed as swearin quite a few years ago (when i was at school etc), not they're usin it in soaps like "Neighbours" (yes i watch it!).
