foggy147
Hello everyone, me and the better half are heading off on a round the world ticket on the 29th November to the following destinations: London - Los Angeles (5 nights) - Auckland (make own way to) Christchurch - Melbourne - Sydney - Hong Kong - London Our main destination is going to be New Zealand where we expect to be for around 6-8 months before heading over to Australia, we both have our working holidays visas for New Zealand. Unfortunately I cannot apply for one again for Australia as I have already had one in the past. Just wondering if anyone can offer any advise on some of these places, we have planned what we would like to do in LA for the 5 days, universal studios, Six Flags Magic Mountain, walk of fame, the usual touristy stuff! As for when we get to Auckland it's just a case of going with the flow, we hope to maybe get a job in Auckland for a few week. I know there is a couple of people on here living in Australia currently, but not so sure about NZ, would be great to see some Supras on the travels haha. Any advise is welcome

Hobgoblin
I have been to Auckland 3 times, once living near to Manukau for about 4 months. It has a great small city feel to it. Loads to do, but not a huge metropolis like Melbourne or Sydney. Pack a raincoat though, I believe it was Auckland that inspired Mr Finn to write "Four seasons in one day" Take a trip up to the Bay of Islands, just a short distance North, it is truly lovely, and very warm in the summer. For onward travel to Christchurch you could probably pick up a lift share from noticeboards in "Backpackers" accommodation. As I was there for several months I bought a car, and then just sold it on before I left, As for employment, I got a good job from a classified in the local newspaper, you just need to get a tax number from a goverment office, before you can start work. They gave one to me, and I did not even have a work visa. I just told any prospective employer that I lived there. Bet you can`t wait! Graham1984
Backpackers as in ACB or base??? I stayed their a few days a couple of years ago when I went there and to Brisbane,Bangkok. Auckland is weird as it is like being in London without anyone there and it is clean. Head down to the marina as there are some nice bars/boats ect and it is a good place for a few drinks, You can bungee off the New zealand sky tower as well
Lbooth
Got back to the UK earlier this year after being in NZ for 3 1/2 years. Fantastic place to visit. Auckland is very nice but expensive these days, definitely check it out but if your travelling best to get out into the sticks, especially if it's over summer. Be sure to get yourself a car if spending any time there, Supra would be ideal for the roads but a Toyota Camry might be more realistic! North Island Must do's: - Bay of Islands; get out on the water it's magic up there, quad bikes at ahipara is also worth a visit. Avoid in your face tourist packages though, much cheaper to do stuff by yourself or with other backpackers you meet and you cover ground a lot quicker in a car than on a bus. Plenty of work up there through the season as well. - Corromandel for great breaches. A good first stop out of Auckland on trip south, visit cathedral cove/hot water beach. - Taupo and Rotorua are great destinations with loads to do in the centre of the north Island, definitely worth a few days in this area. If you have the time and not in a rush then stop off at Tuaranga and the mount on the way through from the corromandel. - Tongariro Crossing; 17-18km walk over an active volcano, stunning if the weathers good. - Wellington; check out the capital before getting on the ferry to the South Island, North Island is good but it's all about the South when your travelling. South Island: - Abel Tasman if you like Kayaking, if not then get working your way down the Island, so much to see and do and if you like wine stop at as many vineyards as you can! - Hamner Springs is very nice and Arthurs Pass has a great trek that rivals the Tongariro crossing if your into the outdoors stuff. - West Coast for scenery and glaciers, fiords etc. - Then the fun begins, Queenstown, Wanaka, Arrowtown; hard to beat this area and is another good place to do a bit of work, got it all scenery, nightlife, vineyards, outdoor action (walking, mountain biking, stunning driving roads etc) and the best of the extreme sports, the original bungy and the highest bungy are here plus countless other ways to get a thrill. England rugby team seemed to prefer partying here rather than playing rugby when over for the world cup! - If your into road trips check out Fiordland then head up east coast, divert off to check out Akoroa before hitting Christchurch. I'd recommend using the BBH network of backpackers as well, outside of Auckland and Wellington they're much friendlier and good value. Let us know if you have any questions when making your plans. foggy147
Cheers guys, really can't wait, just seems so far away though, and the thought of another 10months of work bleurghhhh! Looks like theres a ridiculous amount of things to do in New Zealand, will definately be getting my fill of adrenaline that's for sure. Were hoping to do some of the woofing scheme too, be good to something completely different, after all isnt that what travelling is all about. Anyone had any experience of this? Some of the places you can stay look stunning
