This one comes with European maps and free lifetime subscription to Garmin map updates. Clicky

You may want to check with Garmin to make sure it will allow you to upload GPX files.

£170 is a lot of money for me to shell out just to use for this trip. I can see me trying to sort out my cheap binatone with euro maps and hope to be able to keep up :D

Well that was a mildly annoying day. Got the satnav swapped for a brand new one, it seems you cannot have the latest maps unless you take the navcore upgrade. So if I want the right maps I have to accept the status bar changes.

So going to have to accept the status bar changes and just go with it. Off to cambridge tomorrow to pick up some suspension so will test it on the back roads from Baldock.

Sort of still on topic but can someone help me with info on how I change my Binatone cheapy to use Tom Tom maps and software and also how to put the new maps (inc Europe) on there.

PM if you can help as then the thread will stay on topic.

Hi Col,

I did it to mine, but had to do a serious amount of work to get it right using software from the internet.

If you want to borrow my Binatone for Dragonball then it has the full Euro maps on it, just a little old. It will get you to where you want to go, it just might not recognise the roads we are taking!!

Word of advice, dont bother with the IQ routes versions of Tomtom. It seems to have some very strange ideas on routes to take. To go to my parents I can go up the M1 or A1. About 2 miles difference between the routes. Tomtom with IQ on decided the A1 was best, I decided not and took the M1. It flatly refused to calculate the route on the M1 until I went past junction 13. So from junction 6 of the M1 all the way to J13 it thought the A1 was a better bet.

So I have turned off IQ routes now permanently.

If I'm honest, Im unimpressed with the Tomtom XXL IQ. The change to the interface is a waste of time, it keeps getting stuck on doing 'average speed calc' rather than my actual current speed, the routes it takes are odd with IQ routes on and my Binatone was just as good.

So I may just try a Garmin at some point to see how nice that is compared to it.

I think i am just going to get tomtom maps for my iPhone as its a lot of money to buy a satnav to use once.

I have been using TomTom on my iPhone for the past 2.5 years. It is spot on, works really well!

I have had mobile GPS apps on tonnes of old phones which I have tinkered on & old PDA's as well but even on my tatty old 3GS it is spot on.

Just been scanning through a few of these posts about satnavs as I've just replaced mine after losing my other one somewhere.

As I usually do when spending a sizeable amount of money, I trawl through the web to find reviews and opinions on what is the best product for the money. When it comes to SatNavs it seems TomTom have shot themselves in the feet with their latest product range. In that none of them have the itinerary planning funtion, meaning you can not set numerous waypoints to follow a pre-planned route.

With this information I looked at Garmin's product range only to find that many people on the internet, having swapped from TomTom to Garmin wish they hadn't.

So I started looking at TomTom's previous product range that had the itinerary planning and found that you can pick up the 750 GO LIVE and the 950 GO LIVE for some decent 2nd hand and even new prices.

Both these have the forward route planning and they also have the IQ routes which I have found useful in the past.

I originally had a 750 GO LIVE which I lost, but decided to buy another one because of the failure of the latest product range and because I remember the 750 GO to work very well on my last european road trip.

If you can't find a good priced one on the internet then check your local Comet and the like. Althought the big stores no longer advertise the old product ranges they sometimes have the old unsold stock in their store rooms. I managed to haggle the price of mine down to £120, it was brand new in the un-opened box and it came with 1 year subscription to live services.

Be aware that there are XXL WE and XXL WE with IQ routes. I think the cheaper ones you are finding are without the IQ routes.

What is IQ routes? Well they have analysed thousands of journeys on the same routes that you want to travel on and they have worked out if there is a quicker route in the real world. I found IQ routes did some very strange stuff and have turned it off, others have been impressed with it.

So the loss of IQ routes would not be a show stopper.

And yes, the XXL devices allow itinarary planning. I used it for the Tunnel run in March and it was fine. Worked just like my old unit. You can also upload an ITN file directly to it.
