Tyson
Does the tomtom app still work if you loose a signal? Maps are stored on the phone. But I think it needs a GPS signal.
ScottC
Maps are stored on the phone. But I think it needs a GPS signal. I'm I right in thinking the iPhone use GPRS? I thought it needs a phone signal to triangulate a position. I'm probably wrong though.
johnny g
I'm I right in thinking the iPhone use GPRS? I thought it needs a phone signal to triangulate a position. I'm probably wrong though. That's just the assisted GPS, however, the phone has a "proper" GPS chipset, so even in no phone signal areas the map still works. What might not work is the data services, such has Google Lookup, Traffic, etc. But, we'd be abroad, where Data Roaming should be disabled to avoid huge data costs on your mobile bill. SupraDan24
So are we saying buy the TomTom XXL Classic then if we need one? I'll pick one up when i get home if thats the case.
Branners
Tomtom go 730 or the TomTom XXL Classic IQ routes seem to be the ones. Need to find best prices now, Halfords have the XXL Classic for £139.
Branners
http://img.tapatalk.com/521d2f07-15bf-c206.jpg so looks like although even if you cant upload files you can still put in the waypoints Hmm, you are aware that we pull on to backroads from Oostende and hit around 20 different way points to get the route we need? Check the Google maps link above to see the route. That will take a bit of time to get in to the sat nav. You could probably get away with 5 waypoints, which is what I used in googlemaps, but its going to take a bit of work.

Yep thats right, its 50 quid for the app so a lot cheaper than buying an actual unit.

Guigsy
dont see the google maps link :S im not about to shell out another 50 quid for an app on my phone though a rough route and some walkies are good enough for me if i get lost

Guigsy
can someone send me a test file for tomtom satnav routes? or ill see if i can locate one online somewhere... just testing something
wile e coyote
mate its in hand with the tyre software , we will be surgesting people to download the free software and then post a link for the routes to put on your satnav
Guigsy
even for the new satnavs that cant do the itinery files? another alternative but more of a pita. for the newer satnavs you can import favorites. we could set each waypoint as a favorite (as a name like "day 1 wpt 1") then each day you just add each one to your route. wile e coyote
ok see what scott and branners do then as we have tested this on our satnavs and seems easy to do

Branners
It seems to be the cheapest with the IQ routes, 5" screen and itinerary planning. I do wonder about this garmin though... :removed link to avoid confusion... Might be worth a go as it looks like it has some nice features to giude you through junctions and lanes. Branners
Removed the link to the Garmin to avoid confusion. Would still like to try out the latest Garmin to see if the interface is better. Was surprised by the TomTom XXL, the interface is pretty much the same as my Binatone TomTom running V3 of the software. But I suppose if it works then stick with it. Branners
Did the free map upgrade on the Tomtom today, let it do the OS navcore upgrade too...which was a mistake. They have ruined the info bar at the bottom of the screen and you cannot reset it or remove the OS upgrade. So it's going back tomorrow to be swapped and I wont be doing the OS upgrade again if I can avoid it. First feelings on the unit are that V9 is hardly a step up from the v3 OS I had on my old unit. But everything is really nice and big so I can see the detail now. They have not used the 5" screen to its best where I think the Garmin's run split screen to show you your route and the lane guidance system. Once it is swapped I will do a decent run with it. If you have used a Tomtom and like them then the XXL will be fine, if you are new to satnav it is also dead easy to use. But I think if you know the Garmin you may find the TOmtom a little simple.
