Marty
Does anyone know if theres a way to see whats starting up everytime my windows xp professional starts up, and removing unwanted stuff(if possible). My pc, although 3+ghz, seems to be getting a bit slower loading up once turned on. Have had a look through the Add/Remove programs bit, and on the startup bit in the start menu, but 99% of the processes that my task manager says are running, i cant find
Lil Dave
hey mate when you are on your desktop go: • Start • Run • msconfig this will show you most things to do with your comp, be careful though this menu can really bugger up your comp so dont close anything you dont know what it is mate Dave
Jay
I quite often go through my process list and google them, just to make sure they are legit. I've had a couple of viruses get by Norton and this is a good way of doing it. There are actually programs that can analise your process list, and tell you which ones are what, and you can stop them from starting up - can't think of any program names off the top of my head, but check download.com or google "windows xp processes". Animal
Click 'Run' from the start menu and type 'msconfig' (without the ' ' ) this'll bring up a window with all the startup programs in it. You can choose what to load on startup.
Guest SSS
Have a look in the registry, specifically in this location... HKLM\SOFTWARE\Windows\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run Everything listed in there will be starting up when you boot your PC. A lot of it is safe to delete if you know what you are doing!!! But if your not sure then i wouldn't! EDIT: Too slow! I guess msconfig is the prettier way of getting there!
Digsy
Use REGEDIT to look in the following location: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/RUN HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/RUNONCE HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/RUNSERVICE HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/RUNONCEEX HKEY CURRENT USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/RUN These are where data is stored to launch programs silently at startup.
