Josh
I don't know how you've managed to do this. From any gap under the car, I can only just about get a finger and thumb on it. There are too many pipes and crap in the way. Nightmare!!!
dan294
You have taken the undertray off I presume!

Josh
Have you got arms like Popeye or something? I'm afraid so. My forearm's too big to get through the gap.
dan294
If you're struggling mate, Aldon Automotive in Brierley Hill are pretty good, I deal with them at work. 01384 572553, ask for Steve.

Oh cool thanks. Unfortunately I have drained the oil so can't take it anywhere. I could stab a screwdriver through it but then I won't be able to get the new one on. dan294
Can you not screw the new one on from the top? Or try getting your arm over the steering rack from the front of the car?
ashbuster
ohh crap not very good news bud do you have anyone else close who has smaller arms? my arms are big too so maybe ill have the same problem, but im sure when i looked last time it was easy to get to from the top. and i take it that you should have the same room as me as its a twinturbo, not sure if theres a difference with a na
dan294
Just phoned my mate that services mine, said definitely underneath and it is tight, but then he's about 9 stone wet through.... Just been outside and looked at mine. Does look tight! See if you can get someone to help you from the top whilst you have a go from underneath maybe? Josh
Right, I can get my arm in a position where I can turn it to screw in but not unscrew so I'm going to stab this SOB
stevie_b
The screwdriver trick should get you out of trouble today, but for next time get a strap wrench or another oil filter removal tool (but avoid the chain wrenches: they can pierce the oil filter and hence are not much better than a screwdriver). Josh
All done Stabbing the old one off was satisfying and the new one went on in about 30 seconds. All topped up and started the engine and it's all good. Thanks for all the help chaps
alex2jz
Great news Josh The less complex engine bay on the NA makes it very easy to remove the oil filter from above. Didn't know it was more of a hassle with the TT.

alex2jz
When you do something for the first time, the apparently easy stuff can be the hardest. That's my experience with the car work i've performed on the car. I had no issues with flushing and replacing the coolant, no problems with changing the oil and the filter or taking the dash out and replacing the stereo, removing a knob is what brought me down. And it wasn't the knob's fault )

alex2jz
Have you changed the plugs yet ? Nope Never on any car. They are Denso Iridiums and they where changed just before buying the car. I didn't accumulated serious mileage since then, so i'm clear of the woods for now But when the time comes i'm sure i will manage it with all the helpful chaps and tutorials around here.
