hemmjonny
Hi all, I am looking for a new run around as my Clio is dead and the Doc says I can drive again in 2 weeks I have about 4k ish to spend and want something nippy, good MPG, low tax and looks good. The Clio i had was good on fuel i once got 72mpg and it was only £30 a year tax but it was a bit on the slow side of things only having 65 Bhp and the electrics where interesting to say the least. So what would you guys recommend? My budget is small so a lot of the cars I am looking at have high mileage, do you think this is a problem in this day and age? Thanks Jonathan Hemmings
Josh
I'm also looking for one. I was looking at a mk4 Golf 1.9TDi but then realised a Skoda Fabia is cheaper on insurance, pretty much the same thing and there are more about for my budget (£3k). Havard
We have a Black 54 plate Celica 140. 17" Alloys, leather seats and all that. This is due to be MOT'd in February and then put up for sale. Has 65K on the clock with a load of history, previous MOTs and an RAC inspection from a couple of years ago. Mrs H has been using it since her company car went back last April. We picked it up in May with 61K on the clock. Reliable and fun to drive. http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/1482/p1000326o.jpg H. Swampy442
What is it with people and mileage? The past 3 years Ive lived on a motoring diet of sub 700 quid cars. All of them Tdis, all of them 150k plus. Current Skoda Octavia, 180k, last one Mk3 Golf Tdi, 215k miles. Seriously pocket 3 grand, get a VW diesel with tax and test. Modern engines have no probs with medium to high miles of looked after. Could get a nice Passat or Octavia for a grand or just over for that money. Clancy2k
I'd go for a nice mk6 Celica GT.. They are cheap as chips now a days and thier engines are bomb proof.. I had a GT-Four for 3 years as an everyday driver, had zero problems with it.

Scott
Fabia VRs is a great car and can be had for not a lot of money. As said, don't worry about mileage. These engines go on forever as long as they have been looked after well. I would be more inclined to have a good look over the engine bay and see what receipts/knowledge the previous owner had of how the car has been looked after. Fabia VRs with a remap is a little torque monster, great to drive and munches up the miles with 50mpg.
Havard
I like these just the mpg is a little on the low side for me i would like somthing 50+ nice car though. No problem. We have probably been getting 35's out of it around town and maybe 40 on a run. I am sure it will go quickly in Feb as there are very few low mileage ones around. It's a buyers market so good luck with the search. H.

Diesel will be the only option for you then, Scott has made a very good suggestion. TDi Golf's are pretty good, as are passats, I'd be looking at an Accord TDi, civic TDi. Josh
one of these LINK Job done. I was looking at one of those and it'd be perfect, but there were plenty of 1.4tdci but not a single 1.6 within 100 miles of me. Good call
DodgyRog
As already said, don't be put off by mileage on a diesel As long as it's got decent history and has been looked after you should not have to many issues I got a Peugeot 406 2.2 Diesel Estate on a Y plate (2000) with 120k on the clock and it spotless on the inside, has cruise control, electric seats, climate control, heated mirror with auto tint and electric everything All in all it's a really comfortable drive and my daily comute is basically driving across windy common land on the way in and sitting in traffic all the way home and I am averaging 45mpg and that's not driving carefully at all I paid £1200 with 10 months MOT and 5 months Tax and it had a bill in the paperwork for over £1500 spent about 10,000 miles ago, that included new discs and pads all round, as well as most of suspension components The only thing I have found wrong with it, which I spotted before I bought it, theres a small leak from the bottom of the A/C cooling rad, which I am not bothered about

Good call If its for a cheap economical daily why do you need a 1.6 ? 0-60 is a couple of seconds differant and top speed is still 100 + on the 1.4 ! dangerous brain
I like this idea but i need something reliable as this new year i will be travelling up and down the country. I'll second it. I put over 40k miles on a £400 100k mile rover 220 sdi and other than a puncture and needing some new brakes it never let me down. In fact its sat on my drive now another year and 25k miles more as he is borrowing my car for a week to test drive it (he wants a mazda MX3 and I own one at the mo). The thing is he will sell that car for the £200 he paid me for it even as a non runner as people want cheapy runners even if they have to fix them so its not that big a gamble. If you are that worried about breakdowns get full coverage for premium roadside assistance. FWIW though I see alot of supposedly good cars sat on the roadside awaiting recovery and not really all that many sh*tters.
Dnk
That's not like you Dunk, got a hangover;) No its just old age i think Second paragraph Dunk, he has 4k to spend. Yes i got it now lol Sorry to the op for missing it With 4k to spend the worlds your oyster with cheap economical cars but if monies tight i'd save 2.5k and still get a nice 1.4 tdi Fiesta, theres a 2002 with 100k on it on the trader for £1495 has 68 bhp & 118 ft lbs of torque so way more than your old Clio

After spending so little on my motorway milers and never getting let down, I doubt Ill ever pay over a grand for a daily driver again. You wont lose much, if any cash when you sell them, dont need to keep a service history. I cant see the problem personally lol
