tooquicktostop
The MK1 Golf Cab will be back in a week or so and I have plans for it in 2012, I want to invest in a major engine upgrade, I have been trying to get some info from the MK1 GOLF owners club but it as a very quiet forum unfortunately. With so many turbo experts on here does anyone have any recommendations for a power upgrade with a tuner who knows there way around the car and the conversion you recommend, The car currently has a very good and strong 8V engine which should be worth a few quid. I have seen the following with both good and bad write ups 16V conversion is apparently easy but not a major power gain 20V Turbo engine is very popular and delivers good power? VR6 is very good power gain but is very heavy and a difficult job? G60 Supercharged again seems popular? Anyone here got any ideas/tips
JamieP
The 1.8T 20v seem a good engine, Ryan tuned this mk2 on a syvecs, he was at the fight club event with it a couple of years back. he did a 10.6 and i did a 10.5.

j_jza80
It depends what you want out of the car really. 1.8ts are a fairly straight forward swap as the bell housing pattern is the same as various gearboxes in the mk1. However, my 160hp mk1 GTi is a rapid car due to the weight, I don't think I'd want any more than 200hp in a fun road car. My money would probably go on a 1.8 gti engine on ITBs If it wasn't a cab, I'd be looking at TDi transplants

kill1308
The 1.8T would be great I think... the one's from the Cupra RR / Audi TT etc make 265ish bhp with a remap (225bhp standard), I think that would be plenty in a MK1 without losing drivability. I think that's the AUM engine with the K03s turbo but don't quote me on it. I believe the one from the MK4 Golf has the K03 Turbo and starts with 150bhp and around 210bhp with a remap. tooquicktostop
With a little reading up tonight the 1.8T is looking like the best option, with 225BHP This company offers the conversion for £4K, anyone heard of them http://www.mvdevelopments.co.uk/whatwedo.php

Ricky49
Ahhh. I'm a member in the Mk1 owners club and it's a slow forum, shame really for such a classic.
Miguel
16V conversion is apparently easy but not a major power gain As you've mentioned, easiest and cheapest conversion if you like to scream the nuts off an engine to get the best out of it. 20V Turbo engine is very popular and delivers good power? Best all round choice out of all the engine conversions IMO. Light, reliable, easily tuneable and readily available. VR6 is very good power gain but is very heavy and a difficult job? Great engine with a lovely sound and plenty of grunt, but too heavy and totally ruins the handling on a MK1 - It sure ruined it on both the MK2's I converted. G60 Supercharged again seems popular? Again, much like the 16V conversion, the G60 is a relatively easy one and light enough not to spoil the MK1 in the corners department. But the G-Ladder chargers can be 'fussy' at any sort of decent boost if not maintained and built properly, and specialists for them are thin on the ground. Here's a what a 20V turbo looks like in an MK1 that Awesome GTI did. http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/images/mk1tt3.jpg
gavin.starr
What about keepint the weight right down and doing a polo g40 turbo engine, i have just put a supercharged engine out of the g40 into my mk3 breadvan which is good fun. There are a few folks on the g40 forum that hav turbo'd there g40 engine and achieved 190hp and more quite cheaply.
