Paulie
Hi everyone, I've just done something really stupid. I have a MK4 NA Jap Import 1994. I'm taking the dash out for painting at a local body shop. Now, before I owned the car someone had taken it to an automotive electrical guy and got a fog light conversion, where a switch is on the console (beneath the stereo). Only my outer brake lights ever work as brake lights (the inside ones are used as fogs only). I took out the dash and the 3 wires with spade connections going to the back of the switch came away really easy (without me noticing). I've tried to put them back in but no matter how many combinations of fitting these wires I try I can't get it to work properly. The wire colours are light pink, red and brown. Sometimes the light on the front of the switch works other times it doesn't and the fogs work?? Either way it's annoying the hell out of me. I'd love to get back to where you flip the switch, the light on the switch illuminates and the fogs work. RATS!!! Also now seems like the dimming thingy for the odometer doesn't dim when the lights are turned on. I'll have to wait till tonight but I'm betting that the dash lights aren't working either!! I'm an idiot. Anyone got any ideas out there? Don't fancy taking this to an auto electrician and getting fleeced. The back of the switch has 4 spade type connector thingys there if that's any help. Take it easy guys. Paulie.
Pete
Do you have a multimeter?
Paulie
I do, I have no-idea how to use it and I've just realised the battery is dead. Sorry! Do you think I may have caused permanent damage by screwing these wires around?
Pete
Maybe blown a fuse, probably nothing too bad. Only way you're going to work out which should be on where is with a multimeter really.
Paulie
Just changed the fuse (it had blown) for the dash lighting speedo etc. Now the odo goes out completely when the headlights are on. I didn't have the dimmer plugged in at the time so I turned the car off, plugged in the dimmer and tried to 'brighten' using the dimmer. Still nothing. These cables are unplugged from the fog switch and have insulating tape over each connector to stop them 'shorting' out a fuse again. I think I may have to phone the Supraman or a auto-elec guy tomorrow. Bloody thing!!!
Rob
Exactly the same set-up as my NA, and the same thing happened. Unfortunately, my wires are a different colour. One of the wires should be the 12V Acc purely to power the little red light in the switch. Can you remove all the dash and trace the wires to find which is earth, and where the others go to. I'd expect them to be branched off the existing wiring.
Paulie
Hi Rob, Yeah, all the dash is off right now. The three cables are covered in a black 'sheath' after about 4" of exposed wire. I'm getting the multi-meter battery today so I should be able to test which one wire is which (hopefully, with the aid of a pal who knows electrics). Thanks for your help fellas, much appreciated.
