Irish Govt set to change rules around internet downloading

The Government is to change the rules surrounding downloading in Ireland, in a new attempt to curb illegal downloading of music and movies.

Authorities are to close a loophole that currently allows Irish people access to sites that offer pirated material.

The Department of Enterprise, Innovation and Jobs is expected to publish an order allowing entertainment producers to seek court orders barring internet service providers from offering access to gateway sites.

The Government is expected to introduce the new order in January in response to recent warnings from record companies that they might pursue legal action, if rules were not changed.

Does the UK have anything implemented, just wondering any way around it if the Internet providers are made block access to Torrent sites?

The American government are also discussing a law at the moment that will give them the ability to remove/block websites, the entire site not just a portion, that have the potential to host copyrighted material. YouTube, vimeo, Facebook, imgur, yfrog, photobucket, and I guess most forums too could be affected. Even if your not in the USA. http://www.americancensorship.org/

As much as I agree with Mr Wilson on his views I firmly believe Passing a law that would allow Government power to remove or block such sites from access is asking for trouble it would become such a broad legal issue that The Government and other political groups would end up trying to block any site they dont agree with.

A good example of Government passing such broad Laws would be the implementation of stop and search under the terrorism act abuse of this power is common ground in the uk.

I agree.

Nanny state anyone? More and more control is being placed on the public, next they will be blocking any sites which they don't want you to see.

Hold on this sounds familiar...

Could be the end of the Internet as we know it, and it would be such a shame. as i suspect all the free info now available would then fought over as intellectual property, as once stringent restrictions become the norm, people would then want to make money out of it, so you will be paying through the nose for everything.
