Fixed my own PS3 yesterday for £20.

My ps3 is the 09 slim model and i noticed it started to jump places when watching blueray and then started to not read games so i called a few console repair shops and was quoted between £70 - £80 to fix the disc read error's.

So i went on youtube and typed in PS3 LASER REPAIR and there are a few HOW TO on there so after watching a decent how to i decided to take mine apart as its out of warrenty anyway.

Needed a M8 star screwdriver with a small hole in as they are security screws but dont have, so out came the grinder and turned a small flat head screwdriver into a nice shaped fitment to take the 3 M8 screw out, all the rest are just normal philips heads.

Very easy to take apart, and then to remove the disc drive again simple job and inside the metal box is the laser board with both Game reader and Blueray reader so you have to change both as its 1 board.

You can simply buy just the laser board ebay £23 or the laser board and drive unit together £33, so i just bought the laser board and fitted it within 10 mins and works perfect again for £23 lol, not bad to say i was quoted £80 for half hours work.

So if your PS3 ever come up with disc error or disc dirty then change the laser for £23 DONT pay £80 for the same repair and if you think you cant do it watch the HOW TO on youtube EASY.

Nice one Num  i've done a few lasers in the past, i think people think they are far more complicated than they are :)

Know how to fix the red blinking light error? Mine beeps, flashes yellow 3 times then continually flashes red

Its fixable, it means reflowing the solder on the main motherboard, i did mine, but it meant completely stripping the ps3 to component parts though, and then getting a heat gun on the motherboard  Worked fine once back together, for a month, then bang, did it again. My advice, fix it using the reflow heatgun method, take all your data off it and sell it as a repaired one so no comebacks. It'll only break again a month or two down the line so buy a new one instead :) i did.
