Just brought my first big bike, got a helmet question

Had my first big bike delivered yesterday, after 12 years not riding after an accident.

I got a 2002 yamaha fazer 600, in black. It has been dropped and has a few scratches but nothing major. Pics to follow

Looking at helmets and my last one was an Arai that my dad brought me, can't remember but I'm sure he paid about £450 for it, I keep seeing lots of helmets for sub £100 that are still gold standard, now years ago the cheaper helmets wouldn't have had the gold rating on them so is a £70 Viper helmet that has the acu gold rating, going to be very different in terms of safety to something like a Arai, Shoei, shark etc?

Dont skimp on a lid mate its the most important bit of kit i have an Arai rx-7 gp really light and great if you're out for a long time. Personally i would go for another Arai or similar mate. Cheaper lids imo tend to have weaker venting and the bitches fog up at times. Go down to Orwells and get sized for a lid mate then get it cheaper online i know there pretty expensive in there. My sis got her Arai for sub £400 and this time of year mate is ideal to be shopping for bike gear.

No is the simple answer.

The EU got all wound up about us using the British kite mark and performing our own tests and said we had to get inline with there tests and standards they introduced things like the sharps test ( resistance to puncture from shap objects) some of the best helmets on the market failed (carbon ones etc) and the cheap plastic ones passed (due to being hard plastic) so don't just assume that it has the stamp on the back its as good as the expensive ones. I have a Caberg 170 pound helmet and a Arai rx7GP worth about 600 quid then and the difference is huge both are safe but the arai has better fit a "D" ring strap better noise reduction lighter and less head bob at high speeds,The caberg has the internal flip down sun visor and a buckle type strap (not allowed on some tracks) but better than having to carry extra visors and stopping to change them all the time. When it comes to helmets spend the money be safe and comferatable.

Having ridden bikes for years in the past and now working in the same lab that does all the helmet testing at BSI (the 'Kite Mark' lot) I would always say pay the extra and get something decent as there is a huge difference in quality, comfort etc.

That's what I noticed, £70 safety hats which was gold rated !! I could not spend just £70 on a hat though..just won't not feel safe with one of those on. I bought a HJC hat for £190.00... It's not a £400 hat but its Gold rated and i checked out the model on YouTube and on line reviews and it was very well rated + it's a great fit too .. I found some most of the expensive hats did not fit me well anyways..

Same with leathers... I bought a 2 piece Frank Thomas XTi II leathers from J&S which had great reviews from the shop and online as well which costs me £750, but I have seen the odd person say there rubbish and your much better of with a 3k suit lol... IM NOT BUYING A 3k SUIT !!!

At the end of the day I have bought the best stuff I can afford and I'm very happy with them

My advise is to find a safety hat that's fits you good and is the best for you budget, take a pic from your phone with the make and model number and check out the reviews on line + you can see if you can get it cheaper too...which couldn't by the way lol

I have spent £1200 on gear so far and I have not got the bike yet ! Lol will be getting a GSXR 750 K4 when the weather gets a bit warmer :eyebrows:

I've never seen a suit at 3k mate you will get a proper good one piece suit for £650! It's not a hat lol its a helmet or lid bud :D

Good luck with finding a k4 that was my first bike.

Lol the "hat" is a work thing lol loads of bikers at work and one guy calls them hats lol

I cant wait for my GSXR ! I'm always on Autotrader at the moment lol, already had a look at this lol

How do you rate them mate? From what I have read there fantastic bikes.. Few guys at work have had them in the past and said they good bikes. Anything I should look out for ?

They are good bikes mate as long as it's got service history and never been dropped you wont really go wrong. Make sure the plastics dont have any signs of heavy scratching from a drop. I joined gixerjunkies.com a while ago and its a great aid for gsxr bud same as here for supras and like here has a great bunch of people that are willing to help. Try checking out pistonheads aswell you will get one with lower miles than 14k mate. J_jza80 is absolutely right be on your guard out there ride safe. Oh and the k4 750 is stupid quick if so pick you're moments if you're winding it on and enjoy.

As above really, helmets are an area where you really do get what you pay for. Ive got an Arai Giga Quantum sat under the stairs should the biking bug bite me again lol, still hanker after an RSV mille or a KTM Super Duke.

K4 GSXRs are cracking bikes, friend of mine has had 2, he loves them :)

I can vouch for Arai as i actually crash tested one and it saved my life, that was 23 yrs ago as well

so i'd guess helmet tech has moved on to even higher levels since then !

Im in the process of getting back on a bike and will be buying the best lid i can afford, £450 gets

you the latest Arai RX 7 which is what i'll be getting if i actually do ride again.

Get yourself a good lid mate you dont want to scrimp and scrape when riding a bike. I spent around 3 grand on my kit but its worth it at the end of the day. Love me cars but ya dont get the same buzz as riding a bike. 180 in a car feels quick 180 on a bike feels like warp factor 9 on the enterprise lol :D
