Geo
Right, so popped out for some Milk in the Audi. Pulled up to a roundabout and stopped for the traffic coming from the right, to my delight i see this burd trying to take a draw of her Ciggy while negotiating the roundabout, and heading towards me. a quick honk of my horn to warn her and she swerves back into her lane to pull off. IMO i think smoking should be banned in cars while in motion... What you think folks?
johnny g
Where does it stop? A bit too far IMO
Gaz6002
Yes. Unfortunately, while 99% of smokers are sensible in the way they smoke while driving, there's always going to be that 1% who are a danger to themselves and others.
probrox
I'd say no, but I'm biased. Saying that I have seen a few near accidents through others smoking.
stevie_b
I'd say no. It can be dangerous, but then again so can most activities if people don't take care. I don't have data to back this up but I think having phone conversations (on hands-free kit) whilst driving is dangerous. I think it's the mental involvement in having a conversation, rather than holding a handset that's the main problem.
Attero
If you can't drive whilst having a fag, you are a terrible driver. You might aswell ban breathing whilst driving.
probrox
I think smoking is just one of many things that can be distracting, it all depends on the driver I suppose. Waving to your mate going in the opposite direction could be a big distraction, but you couldn't ban that.
Shane
IMO yes it should be. It has to be safer not to have a fag on the go with a red hot glowing ball on the end surely. If it gets dropped and starts to burn through your clothes into your flesh then the pain of this must affect the ability to drive. Cant be any less dangerous than eating a sarnie at the wheel or taking a swig of coffee or whatever and I think you can be knicked for that. Stonkin
Tricky one, but can see where you are coming from Geo. But as said above, if thats the case then so many other activities should be banned whilst driving also. I was behind a guy the other day approaching a roundabout. He was in the right lane going right i was in the left going straight on. The guy just carried on driving directly at the roundabout, at the last minute he slammed the brakes on before he hit it and pretty much came to a complete stop just before violently swinging the car to the left (nearly into the side of me) to avoid hitting it. As i passed and gave him my thoughts, he was busy filling his face with a cheeseburger. Some people are just in cloud cookoo land.
Dnk
Where do you draw the line ? what about chatting to passengers in your car, changing the radio station/cd etc etc
Shane
Where do you draw the line ? what about chatting to passengers in your car, changing the radio station/cd etc etc Surely its about minimising the risk. If you are chatting and someone plls out in front of you, you shut up and divert your attention to whats going on. If there is a piece of smouldering tabbaco or hot rock making its way through your leg your attention would be focused here. Is eating or drinking at the wheel illegal? For some reason I thought it was, but maybe its not. If it is, then imo smoking should most certainly be.
probrox
I thought that eating and drinking were not illegal, unless causing you to drive in an unsafe or careless manner. Could be wrong though.
ripped_fear
Yes imo, you can get 3 points on your license and a fine if you a caught eating at the wheel, for driving with out due car and attention so how is a cigarette any different. Kopite
Wasn't a girl done for eating an apple whilst driving? From what I remember, there were 2 sides to that story. One being that she was innocently eating an apple, the other being that she was driving like a loon at the same time. I'd hate drinking a bottle of water whilst driving to be made illegal but I imagine if smoking was banned then that would be too. One reason I'd like to see smoking banned in the car is the sheer number of people who throw their fag ends out of the window onto the road, or as in my case, onto my car as I'm behind them! Jamesy
yes if children are in the vehicle , drives me loopy when i see parents abusing the children . HELL yes totally agree with this - in this day and age this is an awful sight - years ago it was the norm,,,,,,no excuse for it now though with kids in the car
probrox
yes if children are in the vehicle , drives me loopy when i see parents abusing the children . I'll agree to that. I smoke in my car but would never do it with children present.
Westy
I'm sure there are talks for this legislation to be put in place already mate...heard about it a while back but can't remember where from. It surely can't be passed without evidence backing the fact that it effects driver awareness though...otherwise it's just another money spinner! drift_bear
If the driver is by themself and smoking and i dont see why it should be banned, thats like banning them from smoking inside there own home BUT if theres a child or a non smoker in the car then they shouldnt be smoking and should be thinking about the others in the car, same as if at home they should go outside to smoke. Geo
One for the smokers be HONEST here So, how to go you go about lighting up in the car?? Are you distracted at all?? How long for? Have you dropped hot ash onto yourself whilst driving?

Have you dropped hot ash onto yourself whilst driving? I'm not distracted, and yes Ive thrown hot ash onto myself. Ive let it burn my leg once whilst navigating a busy roundabout in london - because my priority was driving at the time. I'm don't smoke now, only vape, so I don't have that problem anymore, including going out in the cold, I can stay warm and enjoy myself
Digsy
I thought that pretty much everything that required you to not have both your hands free to operate the vehicle controls was already banned (i.e. eating, drinking, talking on a non-handsfree mobile). Maybe someone in the 5-0 can clarify, but I recall that this even applied when sat stationary? I recall a news item saying that someone had got charged for drinking from a water bottle while sat at traffic lights, back around the time that using mobiles whilst driving was banned. I cannot believe that its not already banned. This talk of "ban it if there are children in the car" is ridiculous. Yes, its a smaller space, but you could open a window and in any case if the poor kid is subjected to 40 a day at home then I doubt a few more minutes in the car wil make much difference. Incidentally, if it is true that you cannot drink and drive (so to speak) I find it odd that while many new cars now have the ashtray and cigar lighter as an optional extra, they are usually full of cup holders as standard... kill1308
I don't think they should ban it. It's bad enough that smokers got banished outside of all pubs (instead of getting their own section), let alone stopping you smoking in your own car. I think lighting up whilst on the move is another matter though to be honest, I don't roll or light cigarettes whilst I'm moving, but smoking one isn't an issue in my opinion. If they ban it, then they should also ban the following : -Car Stereos -Aftermarket Gauges (if you're worrying about your AFR's or EGT's then you're not paying attention) -Satellite Navigation systems (or stop them responding to inputs unless stationary) -Passengers -Hot pedestrians in short skirts
