tbourner
I'm a wuss, won't go hotter than a Madras, normally I stick to good old southern fairy boring Chicken Korma. I fancy something equally wussy but different, what do you suggest? I tried Pasanda before and hated it, which is odd. Should I go for a Kasmiri? Or maybe a Malaya? This is a lunchtime work thing, so I think Madras is out, although I do like them on occassion - I'm expecting to be asleep in the afternoon, but asleep and eeking gasses and possibly sharting myself is not on the plan, so mild is the way. Josh
Bhuna. Or Tikka Masala.
Scott
South Indian garlic chilli chicken. Really nice curry with just a bit of a kick, enough that you know you're eating a curry at least. A proper madrass is actually very hot, just under a vindaloo I would say. I don't like Vindaloos at all though, not very nice tasting. I prefer a Phall which, although hotter than both, tastes very nice.
tbourner
Butter Chicken. What now? Bhuna. Or Tikka Masala. Bhuna says it's cooked with tomato, onion, thick sauce, which sounds a bit dodgy. Normally would go Masala as the next safe option, but didn't like the last one I had in another Indian. That thing's not on their menu, feel a bit odd asking for something that's not there in case they A) laugh or B) bodge it and make it ming. Madras is labelled as fairly hot compared to the very hot Vindaloo. My brother loves hot food (lived in Korea and Thailand) but couldn't finish his Phall he tried! //edit: They've got "Chicken/Meat/Fish Chilli Garlic Massala - Green chilli & garlic flavoured fairly hot dishes "
Gaz6002
What now? JFGI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butter_chicken It's one of the few dishes you can actually get in India. Also very mild but very tasty. It isn't on a lot of menus but if you ask for it they'll cook it. I do it all the time.

They do a "Tandoori Murgh Mosallam - Tandoori chicken cooked with lamb mince, egg, yoghurt & a very special home pounded spices & herbs, medium strength". Is that it? Most of the places I go to the madrass is fairly weak, but still very tasty. One place in particular that I go to, called the Madrass house, specialise in that particular curry. I got to talking to the guy about it and he made it for me the "traditional" way, blew my socks off and I've ate a hot phall, granted it wasn't the most dignified of meals though
probrox
My favourite is either a Pathia or Dhansak. Both are sweet, medium curries. I always ask for mine a bit hotter than normal as they are quite mild. If you like the look of something else hotter, just ask them to tone it down a bit. Most curries can be tailored to suit, and i haven't been to an indian yet that isn't happy to accomodate.
James
If you are a fan of onions, a Dopiaza (translates as 'double onion') is pretty nice. A Karahi is normally quite good too, though any time I have ever went for one, they have varied drastically from place to place. More so than any other option. probrox
Another option is to just tell them what you like and let them reccomend something similar. If you don't like it, try something different next time.

st3ven1
Another vote for Butter Chicken & Dhansak, both lovely dishes, that won't leave you sweating it all afternoon at work.
jazz1
It all depends which restaurants cook to their style, I'm a fan of butter chicken but not all places know how to cook a proper tasty butter chicken.
tbourner
The place we're going apparently the (rather startled looking) chef is Curry Chef of the Year 2011-12! Here he is being presented with his award by Eric Pickles: pic

AndrewOW
Chicken dansak & mushroom rice, Madras hot chicken palock (coriander and spinach) & garlic rice, Tandoori chicken with lemon rice would be my recommendations. An Indian restaurant I took my girlfriend to does a Sizzling Juliette, and it's by far the best tasting Indian meal I've ever had. Whoever Juliette was, I thank her for such a fantastic meal. caseys
Chicken Pathia is my fave which I consider mild-ish. A genuine malaya won't be mild though (I'm half Malay) Or a narga if they have it.
