Number of attempts on driving test

Well guys and gals, my girlfriend has just passed her driving test on her 7th attempt :yahoo:

So I was wondering how many attempts did it take everyone else and if you had failed before passing, what did you fail on? :D

I passed on my 3rd test simply because-

*1st test I stuck in the outside lane all the way down a duel carriageway for a few miles not letting anyone pass :D

*2nd test I went down a one way street and was asked to turn right. But I stayed to the left side of the road and went right, which was dangerous because if somebody came up in the right hand lane I would have cut in front of them when turning.

Took me 3 tests but I think I'm a good driver now, as I've been driving 10 years and driven stupid miles in my mobile job and I've had no accidents and never will touch wood :)

So how many tests did you take and why?

Passed first time, had just turned 18, six months after I first sat behind the wheel of a car. Legally.:innocent:

I had to do the test in my Dad's 1980 Volvo 244, which I'd never driven before the day of the test. Power assisted steering in that tank would've been nice.

Passed my truck test first time round as well, 21 at the time. Had to do that test in a truck I'd never clapped eyes on before the test day too.

They keep throwing curve balls at me.

I can't wait to see what they give me on the day I take my pilot's test.

I passed on my second attempt.

I think I failed the first test because of not going out far enough on a roundabout, while going straight across, second exit. I straddled the outer/inner areas. Plus, I remember a cyclist disappearing under my front wheels, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. :)

I did my second test in my mum's Mini 1275, and it was a breeze. What a lovely little car. Shame my sister had it after her, and completely neglected it, and it just rusted away. :(

Turned 17 in December 2005 and passed in March 2006, 1st time ;)

IMO, if you fail 3 times, you shouldn't be able to try again.

Why? There are a lot of reasons for failing your test and generally it has nothing to do with being a good or safe driver. Mrs H took 5 attempts and she is a much better driver than I am.

I passed first time after 8 weeks of lessons at 17. I then go in my Ford Fiesta and drove like an absolute cock until I got 6 points for speeding. Under todays laws I would have been banned and lost my licence for 6 months. I have since gone on to damage a number of cars and only last week left my handbrake off and rescued my Audi as it rolled down the street.

Passing your test has nothing to do with how good of a driver you are, you learn how to pass a test. Your decision making and reactions are only really tested over the years that follow and the differing conditions. You can also just be unlucky with the examiner that you get. For me, you should have to take your test every 10 years to keep you on your toes. Driving standards are at an all time low and something needs to be done to get the idiots off the road. Punishing people who are taking a test as a one off is not the way to go.

FWIW I drove awfully on my test and somehow got a pass from a female examiner. She was renowned for failing people and I was surprised that she passed me. I even asked her if she was sure..!!

I passed car/motorbike tests first time but there was a guy infront of me waving a red flag

so probably doesnt count.

Doubt i'd pass either test now :D

As for people taking numerous attempts to pass i think 3 goes is fair enough but after that get

the bus :D

 Classic H.

I am glad you are laughing as it wasn't funny at the time. You have been in my street and seen how steep it is. Last Saturday whilst taking Ellis to football I reversed into the street and left the wheels on half lock. I then decided to put some rubbish in our bin before I set off and got out of the car, two or three steps away from the car I hear Ellis shouting DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD..!! I turned around to see the car rollling away with the drivers door open.

I managed to get back to the car, jump in, close the door hit the brake and stop the car before it curled into our neighbours driveway. The boot was well past the brick pillars of the drive and how the car ended up perfectly between them was a fluke. If I wouldn't have been successful, I would have lost the boot, back bumper, drivers door and had a son that would be mentally scarred for life.

Good driver, my arse..!!

First time.

I was at school with someone who got into double figures I believe before finally passing. I still remember him saying, after failing several times already, "I'm OK, apart from when it comes to the steering". Which is afterall quite an important part of driving.

Never driven before but picked it up off my dad who was an IAM instructor.

Passed 2nd time (even though I had been driving for 2 years before my first test).

I failed before I got out of the car park... I knew it was going to be fun when in the driving centre room I ended up with an old women pensioner! I had to walk slowly to the car it took ages just getting there! Felt like I was walking with my nan. Anyway she made me do a reserve into a bay, which I was glad about as it is dead easy. So I waited for the car park to clear, then reversed in looking in all directions & neatly put into the bay, with equal amount of space on either side... sorted, NOT!

After the test she told me that I got 5 minors but I failed... because I didn't look enough times to the left when reversing into the bay (she said, what if a car came into the car park). I said, that I looked 3 times but didn't look anymore as I already parked into the bay & also because we were at the far end of the car park (good 100 metre from the entrance) & if someone came in then I'd notice straight away as I am looking at the wing mirrors reversing up... she had a blank expression on her face.

2nd time, turned up late, instructor brought a new diesel car... got 2 minors. :)
