Scott
Just watching the Dark Knight and one of the scenes shows the current commisioner pulling out a bottle of Scotch and having a drink. It got me wondering about how far away from the real world this actually is. Anyone ever seen anything like this in the real life? I've noticed this a few times in different movies and TV shows, just wondering if there ever is room for a drinks cabinet or decanter in the work place

Scott
ive got some baileys in the garage fridge if that counts If you mean garage at your house then no, if you mean at your work then yeah.... what's it there for? I have a few beers in the office. What do you have them for? Special occasions? Late nights?
DamanC
I would love to say late nights as I'm still here but I drive to the office, not that I'm a big drinker though. They have accumulated from people random people that think it is the normal to pay for work with beer, worth a fraction of labour costs, instead of money. Lol that's nice of them The people who offer nothing are the people who I never offer help to again (depending on the task of course). The people who offer money to me I often tell them to get me a case of suds for my trouble, and will always tell them that I'm happy to help whenever. I don't do that work for a living though, only as a hobby but I know exactly where you are coming from.

He sits down at his desk while having a discussion, opens up his drawer and pulls out a bottle of scotch. He pours himself a half and has a drink while talking. I'm wondering how many places/jpbs are actually like this. How many people have a bottle of whiskey at their work, where they can pour themselves a half and for it to be perfectly acceptable and normal. Alas i have none at work. However when i worked for Eurotunnel it was well known the french border police where allowed wine with dinner/lunch

mwilkinson
I'm sure back in the day, UK Police were probably the same. Especially CID (Life on Mars etc.). If you did that today you would be out of the job very quickly and rightfully so. Scott - maybe you should send the commissioner a letter asking if he has a secret bottle of single malt stashed away? My Boss has Bacardi does that count? Depends, is it on the fly or is it there to actually drink in the open for when it's been a long day or something? I'm sure back in the day, UK Police were probably the same. Especially CID (Life on Mars etc.). If you did that today you would be out of the job very quickly and rightfully so. Scott - maybe you should send the commissioner a letter asking if he has a secret bottle of single malt stashed away? Ahhh but it isn't a secret bottle. I've known guys to have secret bottles in their lockers, quite regularly in fact, but it's the open nature of it all that intrigues me. It's like it's the norm and acceptable in the movies. It's just not a tough day if you can't show it by pulling out a bottle of scotch and having a half to calm the nerves. If they didn't pull out that bottle we would be under the impression that it was a tough day, but not THAT tough. Or something like that. I was thinking more along the lines of upper business management. When you have potential customers in to discuss terms etc. It might be normal to have a drinks trolley or selection or something, to sit down and have a half with the client. To feel at home, relaxed etc. As a side note, the fact that it's generally called "Scotch" in the movies is hilarious. When I was in America they wouldn't know Scotch if they were swimming in it. The closest thing I seen them drinking was a bourbon that tasted like whiskey and cough mixture. As if the whiskey is too tough for them and they need it sweetened. Charlotte
The clue is - it's a film and removed from reality. More specifically as it's based in a fictional town I know drinking at work used to be a lot more acceptable - but then people used to smoke in the doctors surgery too. It's a trait in virtually every proper cop movie though, and cop shows for that matter. In fact I remember an epsiode of Still Game (Scottish comedy) where the boss of a bakery had a drinks cabinet similar to the one on the Alan Carr show (There's a job that has one ). I know these movies are all detatched from reality but the everyday ideas are usually at least loosely based on real life. It is an American movie though. tbourner
I can see it being done in high end American management offices more than I can over here, for some reason. We just go over the pub at lunch if we fancy a drink - some people have 4 pints and come back to work, so it's not the issue of being drunk so much as having the alcohol on the premises. Really If anyone in my work gets caught under the influence it's an instant sacking offence lol. Guys that go for 1 pint at lunch generally get a blind eye turned, anyone drinking 4 in a half hour to hour break would be clearly noticeable lol. dive_popo
Last year when I was working for a big US company as senior support specialist, I was working on US shifts, so basicly at night. I can't say that I never had a beer or two to feel better ... lol
