OK, latest rumours/info about the car:

  • Toyota is working on a supercharger which should provide around 100bhp extra

This was confirmed by an insider I have at Toyota this morning but they won't see the showrooms till 2013.

Gazoo has taken the healm on the conversions and there have been talk of a Turbo charged model as well.

They won't do turbocharging as far as I've heard. Well, Toyota won't anyway. The engineers think it doesn't make for a fun car. You won't get super-wide wheels either for the same reason.

It also weighs significantly more, has a more dated suspension setup and isn't built half as well.

I think it's a little premature to be deciding which one is better built :) the whole idea of the 'Toyobaru' was that it was supposed to be cheap, and it isn't.

It won't be significantly better to drive than an MX5, which is £10k cheaper!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the car (even with the tamed down looks) I'm not a fan of the price, it's far too expensive for what it is!

It's a real shame as an affordable, sporty RWD coupe would sell well, unfortunately the manufacturers either don't have the balls or are too greedy.

Depends what you class as 'cheap' I'd say.

I'm going with comments from several people that I know who've driven the car in both prototype and finished forms, and whose opinion I respect in a big way :)

Watching an old episode of Top gear made me think about how expensive this is.

5 years ago, you could buy a brand new Vauxhall Monaro for £3.5k more than this!

Then there's confirmation we're being ripped off in the £16.5k model that Japan are getting.

If I were to buy one, I'd be waiting for a nearly new base model to appear in Japan.

I really am debating with this car, I desperately want to go down to Toyota and put a deposit down but the price is really holding me back, as once it's specced up with the Sat-Nav and TRD options I'm probably going to be looking at around £30 -31k. That puts into competition with a huge array of cars I like and I can't help thinking that I would get it then think that I could of had something much better for the same price.

To be fair though, its not exactly well kitted out (or painted):

You get no air con, no stereo, no speakers, steel wheels and unpainted front/rear bumpers. So add to that £16.5k the cost of a full set of rims plus tyres, a complete ice install, and a body kit and you have the true price of it, although it is cool that people planning to change those things can start off with a budget car.

I think you've missed the entire point of the base model.

I think that base model will sell well with those wanting to put higher powered engines in there and bodykits from the start.
