jonathanc
Well hopefully some IT savvy dude could help me out here as I am really confused. I have a SKY router with 4 ethernet ports on the back. The router is reporting a raw downstream speed of 7643kbps. Now if I connect a laptop directly with ethernet to the router I get around 5.5Mbps in browser speed tests which is normal due to tcp/ip overheads etc. However, if I plug my homeplug into the 2nd ethernet port the speed goes down slightly. This is made worse when I plug in my 8 port gigabit switch where the speed drops to around 2Mbps! Keeeping in mind there's not other downloads going on and all that I did was physically plug more ethernet connections into the router... so I shouldn't be seeing such a drop? I have to add I use a very long (15m) ethernet cable to connect from modem by the master socket to my 8 port switch at the other end of the room. Am I going crazy or is there something wrong with my equipment?
jonathanc
Well some people recommends only using the SKY router as a modem and use another cable modem as the "router" by enabling DHCP on the second router... Just wondering if this is a gimmick or will this work?
