CJ
Here is a copy of text messages sent back and forth from a phone type chap and me. It relates to an Iphone I bought off here (and so not a dodgy stolen bit of kit) and the issues I have in trying to get it in a state for me to use. Now, I am at a bit of a loss with these things but does what he says he can do / show me how to do seem feasible? I know it is only a tenner but that tenner would be better in my pocket than his. What do you folks reckon? The italicised comments are his. Hi - i got your number off ebay. Whilst living out in Greece I bought an iPhone 3gs off a friend who lives in the uk. It had been lost and reported and a new one issued to him via an insurance claim before he then found it and told the phone company. Unfortunately, by then, the old phone had its imei blocked but as I lived outside the country could still be used. Sadly, the diagnosis of a serious illness and subsequent need to be treated in the UK has meant that plan is out of the window. My friend has tried asking Orange if they can unblock it but they say that it is now the property of the insurance company and refused. I had thought about contacting the insurance co but in all honesty I dint think they will help. Is there anything you can do? Hi I cannot perform the unblock myself, but can provide step by step instructions on how to do this for £10, payment is accepted via PayPal or bank transfer Thanks Hi - thanks for replying. Is that to unlock the barring of the imei? Would I need any special tools? To be honest, I'm not too great on the tech side of things No just a pc and the standard USB lead for connecting the iPhone to the pc, it does require jail breaking the iPhone, but how to do this is provided in the instructions Thanks Hi - I did a particularly stupid thing recently (I did say I wasn't too clever on the tech side) and updated the software to 4.3.5 which a mate has told me cannot be broken to allow unlocking from orange or jailbreak . Is that correct? Not necessarily, there are jailbreaks for the new 5.01 but to change the baseband that is correct, the only option available to yourself is change the baseband to the iPad baseband, unfortunately this will stop the GPS, so you will not have the location available for things like google maps etc. I don't use google maps or the phone as a gps so that should be ok? I have a choice I suppose. I could jailbreak it and unlock the phone so it can use any sim then send it back to kos to have a friend sell it or unblock the imei and then get the phone to accept any sim. Does that make sense? I'm pretty sure that if the imei has been blocked it won't accept any sim, what you need to do is install software that intercepts the imei and sends a "dummy" imei number. Ok, let's give it a try. I won't be able to actually do it until tomorrow though as thanks to Sky broadband complete incompetence I still don't have a sky router. I tried to get them to give me the user and password so I could use an old non sky router but they refused. Ah sorry I misunderstood you, yes it would work in kos, just get it unlocked yes. That's fine, just message me tommorrow and il get the instructions built up for you, just to confirm, il send you the jailbreak and unlock instructions and jailbreak and change to iPad baseband for £10 then you get a choice of what you want to do, but try the jailbreak and unlock first because once it has been changed to the iPad baseband it is completely irreversible. penguin
Hey CJ, i don't think it's possible to change the IMEI number of the device itself or send a "dummy" one as this guy says... all the jailbreak this guys on about does is allow the phone to work on other networks in the UK but thats reallly only if the imei isn't black listed (... sounds like it is with your phone so it wont work even with jailbreak)
kill1308
Have you thought about cutting your losses with the phone, selling to someone else overseas and then getting one that isn't blocked? As above, I don't think you can get the one you have working in the UK. Sounds like a bit of a nightmare

Sounds like a bit of a nightmare I am erring towards that but need to get it network unlocked before sending it out and as I stupidly updated the firmware I think that could be a problem too.
