94 n/a Supra. Not charging, loss of power steering, alternator?

Hi

I Just bought a 94 Supra n/a from the UK ( I live in the Netherlands so excuse my english)

I drove the car home without any trouble but the next morning the car would not start just a clicking noise from the starter.

Jumped the car and it work fine till the next day. While driving the car it died. Lights went weak, loss of power steering and it gave some warning lights(cat temp, charger, foglights?) I replaced the battery but it did not solve the problem..

I was thinking a bad alternator but how could this affect the power steering?

Thanks,

Rinze

Just did the tipex test. Ran the car for 5minutes when the lights startet to dim and instruments failed. The crank pulley damper did not move. Does this mean it is the alternator? Still dont understand the power steering though..

the aux belt must not be spinning enough for the power steering to go, are you sure you done the tipex test correctly? if you did do it again it might of stoped at the same place 1 in a million but you never know,

tipex test

put a line of tipex from the centre of the crank to the very edge of the damper the damper is 2 peaces of metal joint by rubber to supress vibrations and when the rubber fails the aux belt and crank are no longer attached which would make you loose a/c, power steering , alternator.

The power steering is electronically controlled, it won't be off completely... it will just be in motorway mode. When over a certain speed the steering is heavier to help with feeling etc, you will most likely find that this is what you are feeling rather than totally dead power steering.

The fact that your alternator isn't charging the battery could be the cause as when the battery is almost fully drained all power is being drawn to keeping the engine going rather than the power steering. The power steering may also be a larger drain.

Or... it could be as simple as the power steering cable being pulled out. It's down next to the alternator. 2 wire plug IIRC.

I am almost sure it is indeed not complete loss of power steering but highway mode due to the lag of charging.

Did the tipex test again and still all good.

Also took of the alternator and took ik apart for a clean. After installing it looked like the car ran a little better it did not drain the battery as fast as before but still it would not charge the battery.

Is there anyway to test the alternator?
