Guest ugp
My KAD brakes have always had this, I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem. The pads have no shims or retaining pins and seem to just drop into place in the caliper. They move about 3-4mm back and forward in the carrier, and up and down about the same distance. Is this normal? The brakes are virtually brand new, as are the pads. I will upload a video and pictures shortly. Ben
Chris Wilson
3 to 4 mm longitudinal play is a lot, are you sure they have the correct pads in them? If so, and it really bugs you you could have pads water jet cut from blanks to fit better, or run a bead of weld along one edge of the ends of the pads (trailing preferably), and have that edge milled straight and flat, to lengthen the existing pads. Don't put too much heat into the backing plates, use thermally absorbent putty on them if in doubt. Final idea, if the calipers have separate machined pad end abutments, have thicker ones made? Geo
is this not a common problem with these? as they dont have shims, anti-rattle clips etc?
Guest ugp
I'm not sure Chris, it's the pads they came with new when supplied by Whifbitz. Here are some photos, uploading a video now which probably explains the problem much better. It sounds like the brakes are about to fall off when moving forward / backwards slowly. Also if you tap the brake pedal i can hear the pads moving about. They've been bled properly etc.
Chris Wilson
The problem is, if the calipers take long pads and you make the pad too good a fit, the pads expand a LOT at high temperatures and will bind up against the sliders. I like rattling pads as I then know they are FREE pads This is why Toyota use spring steel anti rattle clips in the UK calipers.
Chris Wilson
Looks like the pads just abut the body of the caliper with no hardened plates that you could remake a little thicker, or shim out Probably down to custom pads or welding the existing pads. Or putting up with the clonking.
Guest ugp
Ok, I'm just uploading the video now, give me a few minutes. I don't mind them rattling, but they sound like they're about to fall out.

Guest ugp
Apologies for the terrible filming, but I think it explains the problem a lot better than I could.
Chris Wilson
What a *iss poor fit! They won't fall out, but they will make a hell of a noise. You need to see if that's normal for these things. Water jetting different pads is an option, but not cheap.
Dnk
I shan't be buying any of those, the pads must be bashing the crap out of the calipers. I'd be getting a custom shim kit made by a fabricator unless you can sorce or get custom pads made Edited November 21, 2011 by Dnk (see edit history)
Scott
That's a shocking fit. I quite fancied getting bigger brakes too, think I'll cross these off the list
Guest ugp
Not just me thinking the noise / movement is excessive then? On some of our race-bikes, the custom AP racing brakes have a similar problem with shiz fitting pads, they are nowhere near as noisy as these little buggers though. Where could I find a better fitting set of pads Chris? Could you supply me with any? Ben
Chris Wilson
They have to be water jet cut from blank sheets of material. Porterfield in the USA will do this to a template in a choice of materials. Make sure they are the right pads that you there, first. Let me ask my brake people how they would feel about doing a one off set of pads. Would be cheaper if several people wanted sets of these... Geo
same problem i had with the UK spec one. Anti rattle clips and shims sorted it out though.
Scott
same problem i had with the UK spec one. Anti rattle clips and shims sorted it out though. That's nowhere near as bad lol. Check out his vid. They move about 5mm in either direction
Nic
Before getting custom pads made, I'd ask the manufacturer for a scale diagram of the pads so you can check it against the pads you have fitted. It may just be the pads you have are Friday afternoon specials!
Geo
That's nowhere near as bad lol. Check out his vid. They move about 5mm in either direction iv seen the vid dude, as per my previous post, im sure these are a known problem with this setup, im sure whiffin said this about the Ksport package. Might be wrong though
Dnk
They haven't got a lot of rotational free play from what i can see, possibly 1mm overall. Feeler gauges could be used to see exactly how much. The bigger issue is the free play towrards the centre line of the disc as thats approx 2-3 mm
Kirk
Holy hell look at the movement on those Last time I had a look at KAD 6 pots was on Mike (M5W) car and I'm pretty sure there was no movement quite like that on his.
Guest ugp
Maybe it's the crap pads?
Kirk
I'll drop him a text now. Pretty sure his are porterfields.
Dnk
The problem as i see it is this dimension here is wrong, arrowed in red on the pad My easy fix would be to make larger diameter pins to reduce the amount of play, arrowed in yellow
Guest ugp
Are the pins removable? They look almost like they have been pressed into the caliper.
Dnk
They are held in place by cap head bolts at each end aren't they ? You remove these to change the pads
