Mounting Oil Coolers

Recommended Posts

I've noticed in a few pics now that people mount their oil coolers straight through the aircon rad. Are there any specific fittings/spreaders for doing this?

I'm at the end of my patience for fitting the oil cooler so I'm going to risk it and just fit it between the intercooler/aircon rad with a bit of ducting.

Looking to use the tried and tested method for doing this so any pointers would be appreciated :)

Cheers

Are you going to be doing track days as this kind of setup will not work if you are. We've tried it ourselves and you just dont get the airflow to the cooler.

I can't see it. If I do it would only be for a play/mess around, not to properly go for it.

I'm hoping some extra ducting will help. Were you guys running the stock fans when you had the issues with it?

The only reason I'm doing it is that I want rid of the extra cooling lines around the block and I need a few extra sensors. I thought about just leaving the stock oil cooler with no water feed but decided to remove everything properly for neatness.

I've seen it done with zip ties before - ugly, cheap solution but it works. Better way is the kind of zip-anchor used on electric fans. You can get them from demon tweeks.

Cheers for that. I'll have a look.

Wont it fit behind the indicator in the bumper ?

They should secured properly with something like this and not cable ties

It doesn't fit with the do-luck unfortunately. I might be able to just about squeeze it in but the PS cooler will need to go in front of the rad regardless so one way or another something is getting stuck to the AC rad lol.

I don't think those would go through the rad going by the size of them. I'll have a look through the build threads, something caught my eye the other day. I can't remember if I asked about it or not, I think it was Lee who did the build... back in a bit with pics :D

Mounting it sideways is possible as far as I know.

But if mounted sideways I'd actually be a bit concerned about the height the cooler sits at in relation to the sandwich plate and whether there is a chance of the cooler draining all the oil back into the sump everytime the engine stops and therefore needing to refill everytime you start the car resulting in no oil pressure for an unwise period of time

I'm not really sure I follow. The cooler will be at the same height regardless of orientation, it will just be clocked 90 degrees?

My thinking of it is as follows:

If the car takes say 6l of oil to be filled to the F line on the dipstick, and then I add an oil cooler. The oil will need to be topped up to include the volume of what the oil cooler holds. Once the oil has been topped up and the car has been allowed to cool, the volume of oil in the cooler won't matter, as the oil has already been topped up to accommodate this additional volume.
