Car salesmen - Gosh they annoy me

I thought buying a car was meant to be pleasurable or at least a painless exercise. It appears I am wrong.

Every sales man (and women) I have spoken to so far have been rude, ignorant and on some occasions even offensive! It may make people smile to know these are BMW and Audi salesmen.

As an example, I got told this morning by a sales man that he wouldnt tell me how much approximately a pcp would be over the phone because he didn't want to waste his time doing the maths! Instead he wanted me to drive over to him and sit there whilst he worked it out!

Why do these people need to be so rude? Has society fallen so low that you can't even be polite to customers?

I got irate when I went to a BMW dealership to enquire about an X6. It was a Saturday, I had jeans, Everton t-shirt and trainers on - I'd gone in the Supra to give it a run. I asked to speak to someone about an X6 and he just smiled and said none were in that were affordable.

Suffice to say 9 days later, I had made other arrangements and had my X6, and made a point of going in there to buy my iPod lead and telling him :)

What annoyed me, was he "assumed" my price range based on how I was dressed and the Supra. The idiot (yes, my budget is bigger than Everton's before you say!)

Reminds me of Top Gear when they had Lionel Richie on and he told them when he went into a merc dealership and said he wanted 7 high end cars (think is was S class) and they nearly laughed him out the door. That was until they rang his bank manager then they were real pally :)

I have also dealt with a lot of car salesmen/women before and yeah, there seems to be more and more rude ones (even in high end dealerships) I think this is due to the fact that sales are pretty good at the moment.

Regarding discussing finance deals on the phone this is common. The most they will do is give you a rough figure as they really want to be sure you are interested (hence why asking you to come in) else they will be quoting prices to millions of dreamers out there :)

I brought a second hand bmw at a local dealership (not bmw) a few weeks back.

I turned up in a muddy work van with scruffy work clothes on.

Went upstairs to his posh office and he just said take it for a nice long run and see what you think, gave the keys and said the door is that way...

I was quite shocked but took the car out for 30 mins on my own, took it back and paid a deposit :)

Not sure what insurance a dealer needs to allow randoms to drive cars solo but i think it helped in the sale as there was no hard sell and all laid back and casual.

+1 for the independant dealers

I had the same issues at Porsche dealer... Jeans, tshirt and sandals... very "off-ish" with me, not very helpful, so ended up buying the GTR.

Then a week ago, had the same problem with a real estate agent when I asked about rental potential :( idiots!

But then again, I am having the same issues with specialist garages... 2 places that refuse to speak to me for work on my scoob, just dont get it. Do they make too much money already????

I think the problem with car sales people (moved on from calling them salesmen you will note) is that they are on commission. They hope some guy with a sign saying "I'm rich" with walk in the door and ask for 50 cars. It's daft because you don't get rich by giving your money away...

I appreciate the comment about not advising over the phone. If they had said that then I would be fine. It's the fact they brush you off. The fact he implies his time is more valuable than mine is also bloody insulting. If they waste my time on Sunday when I turn up then I'm tempted to slap him with a bill and see the look on his face.

You do realize car salesmen are aristocratic geniuses with the world at their feet and a Godlike presence over mere mortal customers? They are twinned with estate agents, low ranking civil servants, and hairdressers (as opposed to barbers), in my opinion. They can be recognized by their tasteless attire, an over exhuberant dash of "gentleman's fragrance", speech that sounds like a Patois speaking Jamaican with a lisp, and usually a fake tan, which actually makes them look like an effeminate road worker.

Do you still work for Babestation? :D

Anyway, it's seems a little strange about these Sales people not realizing that people are NOT their clothes.

For instance, as an owner of a company, you could walk off a building site with all the appropriate gear, looking a bit dusty & scruffy, and march straight into a dealership and spank down £30,000 cash for a car.

I'm amazed they're not more shrewd than this.

Whats funnier is when a woman walks in to a garage and turns to the person they are with and explains to them about the car better then the sales person. Its a tad funny seeing the annoyed look on their faces haha
