jaymdee
OK - started car on Saturday and had loads of white/blue smoke from the exhaust (seriously loads!!!) At idle and low revs I had the turbos fully refurb'd last year and this has happened all of a sudden. RAC man thought it has popped a turbo seal and dripping oil into the exhaust. Did various tests on the engine and he thought the motor was OK. As an aside I've had a few times where the second turbo has failed to kick in, but off throttle, then back on and it goes OK... Any suggestions of somethings I can check before I embark on a potentially expensive fault finding mission down the local garage? thanks Jon
Swampy442
How does the engine sound, is it missfiring or is it smooth as ever? Simple things, take the spark plugs out, see what theyre like, take the pipe to the intake manifold off see if theres much/any oil in there. mr lover
White smoke is water, hope its not HG Jon
jaymdee
No misfires and engine runs perfectly. Did sniffer test and no issues there. The smoke is blueish and smells of oil, so pretty confident its not HG.
mellonman
when my turbos let go there was shed loads of white smoke, so much so that on the motorway when i looked out my rear veiw mirror all i could see was white couldnt even see that there went to be a road behind me. so the white/blue would point to oil seal IMO
Chris Wilson
Sounds like the front turbo has gone. I am most reluctant to use rebuilt units nowadays, it's very hard to find uncracked cores, and the rebuilt ones are never as reliable or as long lasting as new ones. The stock ceramic J-Spec units from Toyota last longer than the same in the UK steel shaft type, although I have seen the odd OE UK turbos with ceramic turbine wheels in the past. little num
Hi john take a look at my mk3 supra i had with a turbo gone. Turned to to be the back unit had alot of shaft play and was blowing the oil into the exhaust. Good to watch lol might wanna skip the first 5 minutes right to the smoke machine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1ytO1qD1AA

Thanks for info Chris - is it possible to remove the front turbo on my drive with 'relative' ease to investigate? Hi john take a look at my mk3 supra i had with a turbo gone. Chris Wilson
Not if you value your skin and sanity. Anything is possible, but I would get it done by a garage on a ramp, unless you are a dedicated DIY'er with a bent for self mutilation
jaymdee
Hmmm thanks for prompt reply. Will ring original garage tomorrow and see if they'll offer any goodwill. Warranty covered 6000 miles and I've done 7800 less than a year too!! cheers
mellonman
i have taken mine of twice on the drive as a pair, it depends on if you have the tools to do it, it is time consuming to take the turbos off. im not sure what you will gain from looking at them. you can get to the front turbo cold side compressor quiet easy to see the blades and check for play but this might not show a oil seal problem unless there is lots of play. good luck
