Rare Tyres?

Need4Speed

Recommended Posts

I've got 275/35 Rear and 245/40 fronts but on 17" rims. Getting tyres seems a complete nightmare to such an extent that I'm thinking of replacing the rims with 18s. When I bought the rears, it was Bridgestone S01 only, they were special order and Bridgestone only had 4 tyres in the country. Can anyone suggest any solution other than new rims?

The tyres have done 9000 miles now and are looking a bit worn, and the rims need re-finishing anyway.

Just because your car came with funny sizes (?) it doesn't necessarily mean you have to replace them with the same.

If you want to keep the rims you need to decide;

1. what width tyes fit your rims e.g. how wide are the rims

2. what width tyres you really want for cosmetic/your own reasons (245 on the front is a bit wide isn't it?)

Having decided on the width you need to choose a profile so the diameter is either similar to your current diameter or is similar to stock sizes so it fits in the arch OK.

So now you have a width and profile, you can just ring around and if you still have funny sizes then ask what is similar but 'normal'.

(By my calculations, moving from 275/35 to 275/40 will take you about 13-14mm closer to the arch all round, maybe a bit more taking tyre wear into account.)

I think Christian's right John...

There are VERY FEW 17's wide enough to NEED 275's ! !

[they would be ~ 10" width rims ? ?]

the stock 17's are 9 1/2" and 'take' the 255's - although I MAY

try 265/275 'somethings' just to have more tyre past the rim =

I attract kerbs like a magnet !

what's available in, say, 265/35/17 ? ? (or is it 265/40/17 ? ?)

They're probably a bit 'rarer' then ?

BEFORE Graham Rudd sold me his UK 17's I was looking to buy

some 18's but was finding it hard to find many 10" wide

(well, in my CHEAPER price range).

I found plenty of 19/20" that wide, but not many 18's, and I don't

remember any 17's (the Soops std UK's seem quite wide for their

diameter ie. 9.5" @ 17").

I was gonna' find the Jap' size REAR tyre even HARDER to find ! !

16" x 9" wide = 245/50/16 ! ! ! hardly ANY that size ! ! ! !

Still, you can probably find some, IF you have the time, but then

you don't get to choose a make/type....

Cars huh...... !

YES.....that is a 'tad pricey for RUBBA OOPS ? ! ?

You may be right, if you are/will be thinking of wheels eventually

anyway..

then it may be easier in the long run (or even...ON a long run:p,

sorry about that)

'corse, you could lend me your wheels....I could use 'em a bit....

and KERB 'EM a few times..........MAKE 'EM into 9" wides;) :p :innocent:

The old S-01's were the OEM equipment for the XJ220...

but I digress.

John are you sure those sizes are correct for the Supra? Is the diameter correct?

I just had a look and can't find anything in your size.

on a 10" you could squeeze a 265 upto about a 295....
