Need Advice. What Piano Keyboard Should I get?

Hay all. I'm after a Keyboard (piano one not computer lol) for x-mas and my rents are willing to pay around the £150 mark give or take a couple of quid.

I'm a guitarist and a drummer so I'm not new to music and will hear a chord and could ruffly tell what note it is, especially if I have a guitar with me.

But I'm clueless to what I can get for my budget.

A friend advised the Casio CTK-3000

Any Pianist's advice on what's the best one to get?

Thanks

Paul

To be honest Pianists won't be using £150 keyboards unfortunately bud. I could ask my mate who is pretty handy but his expertise is probably more orientated at the £1500 minimum sort of price bracket.

If it's just to start off a hobby then you can't go wrong with casio IMO, but I'm limited to greensleeves, Old lang syne and chopsticks :D

Is it going to be for yourself mate? If so...what are you looking to use it for? Just general practice? or to hook it up via midi interface to use with pc's or anything else?

Erm.... short attention span? How little into the first paragraph did you make it?

I know the more experienced Pianist's will say and own the expensive ones but was hoping they would know what's the better brands etc...

Its going to be more used for song writing and plugging into the PC rather than me use the piano applications I use in my songs.

Looked at the Yamaha PSR E423 sadly there around the £250 region.

Thanks

Paul

Very! what do you mean? i was merely asking him what he is going to be using it for. To which he answered song writing...hence a keyboard with a midi application or controllers would be perfect so he can connect it to the pc - which is exactly what i asked :)

I bought a yamaha psr-230 over 10 years ago, and it is still going strong. I use it mainly for music production (i dont actually use the instruments on the voice pad for production) but if im just messing around or trying out some new ideas ill just have a bash on it.

If you are solely going to be using it for inputting notes onto your music program, it may be cheaper to buy an actual midi controller keyboard which can be had a lot cheaper than normal ones. Something like this :

Or this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-UMX490-U-Control-Controller-Interface/dp/B003D0DJ9I

These are pretty pricey for what they are, but just an example. Problem with these is that they have no instruments pre-loaded, so you have plug them in via usb or midi, configure it with your music program, and use the sounds from your vst's or refills depending on what program you use.

If you want something that you can play normally and have as a midi keyboard, you really cant go wrong with some of the entry level yamaha keyboards:

Very basic, but upto the job that you need doing. some of the more expensive ones come with weighted keys, so it feels more like an actual piano.

HTH :)

The part I was referring to was your very first question ;)
