Josh
Ah, the BBC site hadn't confirmed what happened. Either way, with the power the seat would go off, it sounds pretty painful!

Swampy442
Thats the third major incident in 18 months, not good. I have no idea how they managed to do it by accident.
ManwithSupra
It has been confirmed the Pilot has died http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/As8455du4yidVpTKGEBJ8g--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en_uk/News/pressass/UKNews081120111644323-1.jpg It seems the seat malfunctioned and fired itself through the Jets canopy and then failed to deploy its parachutes on the way back down. What an awful way to go... Thoughts are with his family.

Swampy442
Very very bizarre. RIP whoever you are, guessing as he/she was solo it must have been one of the experienced pilots

j_jza80
What a shame my thoughts are with his family. However, I hope the do gooders don't try and take advantage of this, and start asking for a ban on displays. I was quite surprised the Reds (and the BBMF infact) survived the cuts. We should all be very proud of the Red Arrows, they travel the world representing the UK (and selling arms for BAE ) and do a very good job of it. Swampy442
Indeed, its failed at the one thing its designed to do. It worked exactly as its supposed to. The problems are, was the pilot correctly strapped in and did the seat go through the complete sequence.
Getrag
Yeah, it will be interesting to see what the results of the enquiry are. Was it fatal due to going through the canopy +/- chute deplyoing? I thought these things only went off with a hard physical pull of something. Seems like the Red Arrows have had concerns previously over the ejector seats. merckx
It worked exactly as its supposed to. Individual parts may well have performed correctly but the system as a whole failed, they've very much dependent on each other.
