What do I need to complete the network I am after? Wireless.. something?!?

I have a Netgear Wireless-N router downstairs. It connects directly to my modem, my PS3, Wii and Xbox360 via ethernet cable. My PC is about 6 feet away in the cupboard and has a fantastic signal at all times. The laptops all function fantastically with line of sight. The problem I have is that as soon as I go upstairs the signal drops quite a bit. It's still there, just nowhere near as strong for the puny antenae in the laptop or in the PS3 etc.

I have another router (WRT610N) and what I was hoping to do was directly wire in the things upstairs so that they would use the routers wireless range rather than their own. I am unsure how to configure the WRT to do this, I am also unsure of what I am essentially trying to make the WRT into.. is it a bridge? A repeater? An access point?

Googling is about as clear as mud. IMO I want it to be an access point but various searches haven't brought me any closer to the answer so I was wondering if I am perhaps missing some terminology or something?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

Yeah that might be what the issue is. I had the WRT54G before and it was absolutely fantastic.

The router I have downstiars is a netgear WNR3500, it has a repeater mode. I was kind of hoping that the WRT610 would be able to act as the master but it seems this isn't the case :(

Well, I've bought a homeplug and this : http://www.edimax.co.uk/en/produce_detail.php?pd_id=242&pl1_id=1&pl2_id=5

I located the Edimax (professionally :p) on the wall in a central location of my house giving optimum WIFI coverage :)

Agree, Routers with wireless built in do have poor range however this can be improved with a wireless repeater.

other option is you use a home plug as suggested to extend the network upstairs and then drop in a wireless access point for that level. help spread the coverage across the house.

Yep! Have a 100MB link running through your power line!

You need either Virgin or BT Infinity Broadband (if you can get it)

I suffered for 6 years, not anymore! :D

Thats the thing ... I can't get it :( Well I am on the same exchange (apparently) that is activated with BT Infinity but I can't get it where I live because its a new build... I just don't get it, if I live somewhere in the sticks then yeah, I will be happy with the 4Mbps max that I am getting now but I am like 1 mile away from town centre :(
