Scott
I have a Netgear Wireless-N router downstairs. It connects directly to my modem, my PS3, Wii and Xbox360 via ethernet cable. My PC is about 6 feet away in the cupboard and has a fantastic signal at all times. The laptops all function fantastically with line of sight. The problem I have is that as soon as I go upstairs the signal drops quite a bit. It's still there, just nowhere near as strong for the puny antenae in the laptop or in the PS3 etc. I have another router (WRT610N) and what I was hoping to do was directly wire in the things upstairs so that they would use the routers wireless range rather than their own. I am unsure how to configure the WRT to do this, I am also unsure of what I am essentially trying to make the WRT into.. is it a bridge? A repeater? An access point? Googling is about as clear as mud. IMO I want it to be an access point but various searches haven't brought me any closer to the answer so I was wondering if I am perhaps missing some terminology or something? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
jonathanc
Most wifi routers with internal antannaes have crap range. I've upgraded to a Edimax AP and the range is fanstastic now
Scott
Yeah that might be what the issue is. I had the WRT54G before and it was absolutely fantastic. The router I have downstiars is a netgear WNR3500, it has a repeater mode. I was kind of hoping that the WRT610 would be able to act as the master but it seems this isn't the case

imi
Agree, Routers with wireless built in do have poor range however this can be improved with a wireless repeater. other option is you use a home plug as suggested to extend the network upstairs and then drop in a wireless access point for that level. help spread the coverage across the house. johnny g
I use the Devolo dLAN 200 at home for some rooms that I (stupidly) didn't hardwire when I had the electrics done. Works a treat. Sustains around 78Mbit, bursts at about 120Mbit.

Yep! Have a 100MB link running through your power line! Scott
When I went into my Linksys router it turned out I had installed the DDWRT firmware many moons ago. Meant that I could set it up almost on the fly. Working a treat. Will need to try streaming HD to see if it's been worth the bother

I can't get it Well I am on the same exchange (apparently) that is activated with BT Infinity but I can't get it where I live because its a new build... I just don't get it, if I live somewhere in the sticks then yeah, I will be happy with the 4Mbps max that I am getting now but I am like 1 mile away from town centre
