costas1
hi fellas ..my problem is that the steering wheel shakes when i brake if i am doing 60 miles or more..i was told that the brake discs were waped have to be taken to a shop and lathering to be done,,we did that and the problem is still there... when we took the discs for lathering we separate the discs from the hubs(2 pieces) we did the lathering and then put them back together.the guy at the garage said that we shouldn't do that cause the discs lost their balance again.. what do you think is the problem? Stephendjb
Have you got any play in the steering?
Dnk
Sounds like rubbish to me. Did anyone check the discs to see if they were warped, ie put a dial clock on them while there on the hub or on an inspection table ? Have all the steering joints etc been checked, wheel bearings, do the calipers work okay and not seizing Edited November 2, 2011 by Dnk (see edit history)
Westy
The discs lost their balance:blink: I would say it sounds like the disks are warped and need replacing mate.
Dnk
I always thought machining vented discs was a bad idea ? if i had to i'd be grinding them and not re facing them on a lathe.
costas1
the front discs are almost new only 1500 miles on them(and really expensive..huge brembo) ..the rear ones are in medium condition...i had the steering joints etc checked..they said it were ok.. the guy at the garage said that the calipers are working ok... what should it be checked on the calipers exactly no i have to say that when we took them to the lathe we did not test them with dial clock etc..my mechanic said that the problem was the discs and we just took them to the lathe the steering wheel only shakes when braking above 50 miles/h
FOSTA
I think you need new discs mate :-(
costas1
is it possible that the discs are destroyed so soon? i talked to brembo in the uk and they say that is unlikely for the discs to need raplacing so fast
wile e coyote
jspec sticking calipers will also not help uk calipers or jspec?

Swampy442
If the steering is only shaking when you brake Id say thats a warped disc.
costas1
another question please....lets say i have warped disc..are we talking about the front ones only or is it possible that i have a rear disc warped and makes the steering wheel to shake..i am asking just to avoid any more labouring if is only the front ones i will remove just them
GINNO78
Nope just change the fronts...I had exact same problem .....New discs from Toyota and problem solved
Dnk
Do you get any shaking without braking ? Were the discs fine when first fitted ? Have you done any serious heavy braking such as a trackday etc since fitting. Before you buy anything get what you have checked with a dial clock with the discs bolted to the hubs. Check the fronts and rears while your at it.
Chris Wilson
Rear disc warpage won't be felt in the steering. Maybe they are warping when they get hot, does the steering shake even when braking with the discs cold or cool? The discs should be ground, not turned to reface them. Sometimes you just get a bad casting, that will contnually warp when it gets hot, if so it's throw them away time.
costas1
what do you mean the discs should be ground? no the steering wheel only shakes when braking cold or hot brakes.... yes i did some heavy braking a couple of times..not in a track but from 120 to 40 just to avoid accident

Nic
A knackered wheel bearing can also cause vibration when braking.
Guest paul bell
My car was the same mate the steering wheel used to shake terrible, new discs sorted it
imi
Does the Brake Pedal Vibrate too?
costas1
yes the brake pedal shakes a little bit but the steering wheel is way much more
Chris Wilson
Certainly sounds like a front disc warping issue. I have never ever changed a front hub bearing on a MKIV, they seem very reliable unless the wheel strikes a kerb, or someone takes a hammer to remove worn or damaged wheel studs and bruises them. I have done LOTS of rear hub bearings, but they will not be your problem.
