neilp9876
Whilst doing a trackday last weekend I got a massive cloud of smoke coming from the car. At first I thought I had killed it but it still runs perfectly. The smoke is coming from oil burning off the exhaust, underneath the drivers seat area so quite far back under the car. Its an autobox and it looked to be in that area. There are no obvious leaks and no large pools of oil or fluids although there are traces around the underneath. Never happens under normal / fast driving. Only occurred when braking as hard as possible from high speeds, i.e the ABS is on full chat (17" toyo tyres in the dry). Are there any breather pipes / over flows or anything around the autobox area? Anything else that could leak under braking from the engine? I would expet leaks to come from the front but for it to be so far back I am suspicious about the autobox? Any ideas, anyone.
Swampy442
On top of the box theres a pressure relief valve, was your fluid level on the high side?
neilp9876
Yes it was on the high side. I have just had a couple of coolers fitted so it had all been topped up to the top. Any idea how much pressure is needed to open the valve?
Swampy442
Couldnt tell you mate, Ive experienced the same thing myself on my old auto. All Id say is get the car on a flat surface, engine running and re establish the gearbox level
neilp9876
Brilliant, thanks for the that. I feel a bit better that its nothing more serious. Cheers
Chris Wilson
It sounds like you have overfilled the auto box, this is really BAD when you use it on a track as the oil will foam, (and overflow, as you have found out) You do realize that you check auto box fluids afyer going through all the gear positions (stationary is fine) them. leaving the engine idling, you dip and check the oil level. If you check it when the engine is not running you will not get anything like a correct level reading. I would drain it to the correct level ASAP, and certainly before it is driven hard. There is no pressure valve, it's just a vent.
neilp9876
Do you think the fluid should be flushed and replaced or will it be ok? Its already been thrashed now.

The last time I checked the level, the car was idling. This time I checked all levels before I fired her up last Saturday. H.
Chris Wilson
The fluid should be fine so long as it does not smell at all burnt, nor look darkly discoloured. It's too dear to waste
wile e coyote
As chris said with engine running put gear lever into every gear (i usualy go back and forward a couple times in gears) then check level with it still running in neutral and on level ground of course.
