Advice on a ford fiesta issue

My son has just rang to say his car is playing up. The temperature warning light is coming on and when he stops the car it sounds like it is boiling over but when he checked the water level it was fine and didn't steam over. The heater is blowing hot.

What should I advise him to look at next (or tomorrow when light). Thermostat? Rad cap? Fan is turning?

My son topped up the water this afternoon and then drove around for 30 mins with no lights showing but later once he went out to do his evening delivery work, the temp warning light came on again.

Anyone else have an idea about the pipes that my friend Jekyll was speaking about?

On the bulkhead, the 2 pipes and a solenoid you can see is the heater control valve. If the heater will switch between hot and cold, I would suggest it's fine.

Check for water leaks. Thermostat housings (under the altenator) are a favourite, as are water pumps for leaks if it's a Zetec engine. Failing that, get a block test done on it to check for signs of head gasket failure. Or get someone to plug the car in and see what the coolant temp sender is doing.

Also, have you got a steady flow back into the header tank? If not, you may have a blockage somewhere, usually in the heater matrix or radiator. Pop the top hose off and stick a hose pipe up the hose, if water flows freely out of the top outlet of the radiator, there be no blockage.

Just had a better look in the light and I'm convinced it is a water leak problem and pretty sure it us from the pipe / connection on the thermostat housing at the top as you look. I'm now going to reseal that and also put some of that seal solution in so that if there are other leaks it should find and seal them too.

Hopefully a nice cheap and simple fix !
