Noz
thats awesome. no idea if its real, some decent technology or magic going on there.

nevins
real there was a program on sky about it the other night, some show about building a ufo and this was on there as methods of moving it

Abz
I'd imagine it is real, bit like when you use 2 magnets to a certain weight to keep them connected. What interests me the most is the fact he can 'lock' it into position, some very interesting stuff!
Scott
Real, I seen it on tomorrows world in the late 80s. The only difference was the extremely cold superconductor was spinning at quite a high velocity. In saying that, I was young so I'm thinking out loud a little here, I think the spinning was to show the benefits of superconductor levitation due to the fact that it would spin for hours with very little energy loss. They were looking into harnessing it and turning it into a generator or something like that.

SimonB
There are Maglev trains that work on the same principle - there's one in Japan. Trouble is things only superconduct at very low temperatures, so it takes a lot of energy to keep them that cold. Haven't seen the quantum effect that keeps it from moving before - normally superconductors repell the magnetic field and float above it. Very cool. I found an explanation for it on their website http://www.quantumlevitation.com/levitation/The_physics.html

Attero
That is super cool. There is so much we could do with this stuff. The maglev trains are becoming wide spread. I don't know how much involvement this stuff has with the trains (despite the maglev meaning magnetic levitation) but it shows this stuff really is useful and will be a big part of our future. a98pmalcolm
That is just insane.. Maybe the 1st step of future travel when the oil and us are all long gone..
Paul R
I suppose the only issue in real use is how to keep the superconductor efficiently cold enough? I wonder if you could have floating cities locked against the earth own magnetic field? Crazy!
mwilkinson
I'm with Scott on this. I watched a video on this when I was at secondary school in the early 90s. My science teachers brother worked for a company developing applications for this and similar technology. Evidently they didn't get very far if they are still peddling the same experiment!! EMPEROR
It's pretty real and you can learn more about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconductivity here http://www.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/question610.htm and one more video for those that are too lazy to read
Thorin
"high-temperature" superconductors have been around since the late 80's, iron-based superconductors are pretty new though, and much easier to produce.
