Do people think that supplements are 100% necessary? I've read equal ammounts of information for and against the necessity. I understand that it would be easier to take them than risk missing out on benefits, but the high cost and skepticism that you can't just get what you need from a good diet has meant I've never used them.

I train upperbody musles 4 times a week and make good progress month by month without supplements. If it's relevant, I'm a natural trainer, so I don't know if it's more important for those taking 'the other types of supplements' to also use nutrition supplements.

Always been something in the back of my mind whether I should be getting additional protein in via the shakes though.

Depends how much protein you're getting through your diet mate, and your weight...

I've heard of people that have taken them and they have worked. But like any illegal drug there's the potential for adverse side effects so just put the mars bar down instead! :D

not sure if they are illegal im trying to find out information for a team mate, as we both play football to a high standard and i dont want him being tested and failing lol

It's obviously hard to know exactly what I'm getting, but each day I ensure I don't miss out on protien rich meals.

I'm 11stone 11lbs and 11% bodyfat, but I only got back off an all inclusive holiday just over a week ago so that's likely to not be the case anymore :D

For what it's worth, supplements are not necessary if your diet is good enough. However, if (like me) you struggle to find enough time during working hours to eat solid food regularly enough, it's a good meal replacement plus has the advantage of being more bioavailable (as it is already in pretty basic form and won't require much digestion).

I'm sure I heard they were, but I could be wrong as I don't pay much attention to that side of the training world :)

yeah its a must matt, im basically the same and really only train top half to the max but the shakes help a great deal with recovery and you will also notice a increase of stored energy- meaning going on more and lifting a heavier set

With sdistc on this one......they are not required at all, providing you are getting enough food for your protein throughout the day which is very very hard to do. They are used to supplement an already solid diet. In my case though as most others, I do rely on them to get my extra protein at times. Ignore a lot of the frankly ridiculous claims on a lot of supplements as well, most of it is pure crap and marketing drivel
