Group Buys

I know this is something that has been covered in the past (a few years ago now?) but when signing up to buy something on a group buy do you chaps ever compare the price quoted with one in the real world?

I've just noticed a few "bargains" of late that seem more expensive than regular sources and wondered if I was the only one who is a tight git that checks elsewhere before handing over cash.

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular but if you are one of the group buy organisers and you know damn well that you are making some profit from members under the guise of doing them a favour maybe you'll be less greedy next time eh?

;)

If they're aware they're overcharging with intent to make a profit, then yeah that's wrong. if people genuinely don't know that it works out more expensive and theyre makin no profit then i won't be too bothered. for example delivery charges might make something more expensive in total but people might not realise

to be honest, i completely trust everyone who's done a group by on here.

As Ro said, if they are deliberately ripping folk off thats bad, but IMHO if they want to take a bit of profit, and i mean a bit, for there trouble, then that dont bother me.

Every group buy over the years i have been involved in has been spot on, goods always delivered and top notch stuff!

I would not organise a group buy due to all the hassles involved so I think all those that do deserve a medal! ;) :D

Funny you should bring this up. I noticed an item on group buy not long ago that was 10+% more expensive than what i get the item for. Maybe i'll see if anyone wants the same item near Xmas.

That's exactly the kind of thing I mean, people just seem to jump in due to the established trust most of us have for each other - we presume all group buys must be bargains :)

I guess there is the arguement that people wouldn't buy the item if it seemed overpriced though so I guess everyone involved is happy - just the penny pinchers like me that have a problem once in a while :taped:

I try to find out the best UK (and US delivered also) prices before I organise any group buys. I make a small mark up on the price, but I really do try to get members the best possible deal available.

I think it's good Michael that you ask the question and would hope that members do check prices locally, if they find that they can get the same part cheaper there, then please let me know, as there is no point me doing it in this case. This happened on the Toyota Light Group buy when it was found that the glass headlights were available there cheaper, so I cancelled that part of the buy. The rest of the group buy went sucessfully and I believe I got members the best deal available.

There is a lot of buying power when buying in larger quantities, for example you wouldn't believe the prices I can get branded parts for here if I bought say 20+pcs of something. One of the benefits of the club is that we can use the buying power we have to get better deals.

If anyone has any comments/critisms about the group buys I have organised so far or ideas or suggestions for the future then please let me know.

Forgot to add, on the group buys I do from here, postage ends up being quite a large proportion of the final delivered price. I know I could get pretty much any part cheaper here, but the key thing is whether I can get the part delivered to UK and still get a good deal.

This was the case on the brake group buy, I can get genuine Toyota brake discs cheaper here, but as they are a relatively cheap product that is very heavy, with postage added it worked out similar to UK price. I knew this and so advised members who asked about buying new discs to source locally instead.

This is also the reason why on some group buys I have also advertised 2 price options, one by surface post to UK, the other by airmail. There are good savings to be had by posting by surface post, but it takes around 3 weeks longer to reach UK, which some members decided was too long and so paid extra for airmail.

I thinks its fair to say that its not just group buys that can prove more costly. My recent purchase was cheaper including fitting than other quotes received on this forum. However I dont blame anyone for making a profit, as long as its not under the tag ' doing you a favour'

As for Nic, your service and prices have been excellent mate :D

I confess I use a dollop (lovely word) of trust with the group buys - I don't bother to look up the prices myself. A recent one I took part in someone posted in the thread that the prices weren't particularly a bargain but that they were about right for the items - very useful.

Not all of us have access to the right places/resources to check the prices on offer - perhaps we should make the trust element work both ways. People should be trusted to offer stuff at a reasonable price, but can we also trust others to speak up if the prices look a little high? That would work.
