Getrag
Bloody iPhones lol. Got a 3GS and upgraded to os5 last night, what a mistake. Now none of my apps open, when I click them they flash open for a second then close. And I can't see any music on my phone at all! But when I view the phone through iTunes I can see the music. What can I do? Revert to a previous os?

Jamesy
3 people at work said when they tried to update it their itunes software all crashed - im going to give it all a swerve for now. hope you can "restore" from a backup mate

Getrag
Ill try and do a restore when I get home. Its a legit phone too. Im a novice when it comes to itunes, backing up your phone and all that, ive never really explored it. Ill have a try tonight.
SupraDan24
And people wonder why i upgraded to a Galaxy S2 this year lol. Your best bet is Google tbh fella, i just tried for you but i'm offshore so the internet is unbelievably slow. As above, try restore it to before you updated the OS, iTunes should have made a backup automatically when you plugged the iPhone in to upgrade to OS5. From what i can tell there is alot of issues with the update so in all honesty if you cant restore it to OS4, its going to be a "suck it up and wait it out" method while Apple release a patch to sort it. ScottM is your man though if you want any technical advice, he likes his gadgets.

Geo
hYes thats very true. School boy error. Is it safe to click Restore, restoring it to original settings? Getrag
Yeah, im sure i remember it saying it was backing it up first before the upgrade. Ill do a bit more googling and if i cant find it ill just restore. Id agree.....dont upgrade anyone for a few weeks lol.

AndrewOW
I've had no trouble whatsoever since updating mine, but then again I do keep everything on default settings to prevent any messing about.
Getrag
None of my apps opened either until I went on the app store and did some updates. Thats fixed it! I just read a similar sort of fix on google that recommended downloading any free app - I think the purpose of both of these is that you re-enter your itunes password into the phone to relink ios5 to the apps. Bloody iphone - what we put up with. Still have the music to fix. I can see all my music on itunes when i select my phone. But when looking at the phone itself it says there is zero on it. Abz
Yep, Getrag is not alone. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/users-encounter-problems-downloading-new-apple-ios-5-.html "...others reported that the brand new update took too long to download." My friend also complained about this, like a lot of iPhone user not very tech savvy & then went on a rant about how rubbish Apple were. I did point out that it could be his 1MB broadband connection which is why it could be taking a while to download. He told me, and I quote "No, Steve Jobs is doing it to make more money". The rule of thumb, if you are updating or wiping, always back up every time! I had some issues updating as well due to the amount of traffic hitting the Apple servers, tried it again the following day & worked fine. OP - Was your iPhone jailbroken previously? When it goes to backup the phone did you cancel it?

Yup, they can be a pain in the butt at times. What's worse for me is that I'm not a fan of the iPhone, the i4 was forced upon me by insurance company for some reason after they couldn't supply me with a replacement HTC Desire or any other HTC / Android based device. Glad you got it sorted in the end anyway, glad to be of help
penguin
if your phones jail broken do the following: 1) do a full backup (can take a while!) 2) "transfer purchases" from your iphone using itunes 3) do a RESTORE within itunes (this will wipe the device clean) and then do the upgrade 4) restore the backup you created in step 1 you'll lose all your jailbroken apps etc but all your data/music/porn will remain intact... imi
I could be one of the many lucky ones to have upgraded an IPAD2 and IPhone4 without any problems whatsoever. Then again, I used Itunes on a MBP - perhaps helps if its an Apple End to End solution imi

Morpheus
Why didn't I read this before I updated mine? iTunes always backs up your data before any upgrade but if you unplug and plug back in, it seems to overlay all the data, so if the update wipes the phone's memory, the backup saves it as no data and restores to a blank phone. Mine's now completely reset back to new and I chose the 'restore from backup' option when installing IOS 5. It then bluescreened my P.C. halfway through restoring and then refused to go any further than telling me to plug it into iTunes every time I tried to restore from backup again, at which point it would synch but the phone would stay on the 'plug into iTunes' screen and never finish the restoration. Finally right clicked on 'Dave's iPhone' on the left menu in iTunes and it has an option to restore from backup there. Clicked it and had two options; new or older backup. Chose older as the new one was a few minutes beforehand, since as I say, it overlays every time you plug it in. Now the phone is restored to the older backup, for which btw, it never says the date or anything, so you don't know what you're restoring to! Fortunately, it's still got all the photos and videos I took or saved, which I just found in the 'Photos' icon despite there being nothing in the videos or Camera Rolls! That's just the new system and the fact that I hadn't taken any since updating, so fair enough. All contacts are gone, as are messages and emails, though they're still on the servers. Now need to re-enter account details etc. Apps are all gone too, so I'll sign in to the store and see what happens. I hate the update already, prompting me to use iCloud etc. Nightmare, beware! Edit; restored to the newer backup and still nothing but photos and videos on it. All this was after being warned by the update that all data and apps etc. would be erased during the upgrade to IOS 5 but that it would backup and restore it all later! Needless to say, it didn't. Morpheus
Is it safe to click Restore, restoring it to original settings? Wont lose my apps/music etc? For any other readers, Restore will wipe everything as it warns. Restore from backup seems to just leave photos and videos on it. If you're lucky, it might do what it says and restore everything. Be very, very careful. Edit; just found this IOS 5 feature video and there's an ad for a wicked looking RC hover thingy too.
