Scott
I wanted something on in the background while messing with my xbox, and I had been meaning to watch it again for a while, so I threw on K-Pax. IMO it's a stunning story (I haven't read the book so can't compare) that really does get the old brain thinking outside the box for a little while. What are your guys take on it? After finishing the movie tonight I decided to type in "K-Pax explained" into google to see what popped up. To my surprise there are very few people who actually think along the same lines as I do (I guess it's because I'm cynical). They all ask for answers based on one pivotal point and yet the most obvious answer, for me, was never discussed. What is your take on the ending? I won't spoil it with my opinion for now, I'd just like to get a bit of insight on other viewers opinions before tainting any answers with mine. tbourner
He's an alien from K-PAX, he went home. Not hard?
Rob
I've only seen it once, a long time ago. I think, that my opinion was that he wasn't what he said he was. However, I may well be overlaying the lies of Usual Suspects over Spacey's character in my memory. I loved the films ambiguity though, a similar device to that used at the end of Total Recall. Comparing the two films though is like comparing a surgeons scapel to a sledgehammer.

Scott
IMO he wasn't an alien though, like Rob said.
tbourner
Why do you think that? I'm sure there are reasons for both beliefs but IMO the reasons for him being an alien are greater - like knowing about the precise details of a star system that has only just been discovered by the greatest human minds - OK so he could be some kind of savant and know the maths, but he can't have seen the star system and understand it's position unless he's either a recognised astrophysicist (which he isn't) or he's been there. Scott
The whole point of the film is to raise the question about the whole was he/wasn't he an alien. I'm pretty sure Jeff covers most of the answers to how he could have came to know the knowledge that he does, it's all theory though regardless of which side of the divide you chose. The few key things that made up my mind for me are as follows...... The Hypnosis - I came to the conclusion that Prot is a childhood imaginary friend and, like a multiple personality disorder, took over the body when the character could no longer cope. The smirk at the end of the movie - This could either be to show that Prot is still in his body and never left (that would be a wierd ending for me) or that there never was an alien and he has just suffered from a traumatic emotional event but he is still there so to speak. The door being left open - Near the end of the movie there is a pause on the door as he Jeff's character rushes through it. There are very few mistakes in movies (none that I noticed in this one) and this certainly isn't one. The pause is there for a reason, it's to bring the audiences attention to it. However, it is very subtle and given what is going on at the time it seems to have been missed by just about everyone. For me it's the "out" for how Bess disappeared without actually saying it. For me it's a beautiful story with nothing to do with aliens other than as is discussed by the characters. If you see the movie from this perspective, for me, it just brings another dimension to it all... much like One flew over the cuckoos nest. It's a fantastic movie and I don't see it at all as a sci-fi movie.

Scott
To be fair this was my 3rd or 4th time watching it. The first time I just took it at face value and just took it as being an alien. I didn't even notice the door until the 2nd viewing, and even that was probably by chance.
The Raven
If im honest i think its never ment to be clear cut at all. I dont even think the makers knew for sure. But it is one awesome move
