jonathanc
Hi all, Basically I am looking for a good hosting company who has a data centre that is fairly local to me. I am in northamptonshire near Kettering. I am looking to do some database developement work and also host personal websites so would prefer a hosting company which supports MS SQL (05/08), Ms Access dbs, ODBC PHPmyAdmin, and MySQL. Also would prefer good monthly bandwidth allowance and storage space. I know there are a few members here who work in IT so hopefully someone could recommend some place good. I Googled for some reference/help but most of those websites are sponsored by hosting companies so I find the reviews very biased :S
hemmjonny
I use CWCS not sure where they are located but they are very good.
stevie_b
Out of interest, why does the data centre need to be nearby?
Chris Wilson
Gradwell, they have been superb to me and several friends who use far more of their services than I do, and who are knowledgeable about this sort of thing' www.gradwell.com
Sheefa
AVOID Fasthosts at ALL costs. The Cottage site I built for my old dears keeps going down and they have 'mistakenly' deleted files several times before in the past.
jonathanc
Slight /bump I've been hosting with a "mate" for 10 quid a month. He has a VPS server and setup one for me but he keeps messing up the DNS taking my website down everytime for hours... Although I must say his Linux-based VPS is really good, lightweight and easy to config. Checked out Gradwell but I think it's not really what I am after. I am after a good local (well at least in UK...) hosting company providing VPS or reseller hosting services... Google really doesn't help as all review website seemed to be sponsored by the hosting company This is the sort of thing I am looking for but I am pretty sure there are cheaper ones out there... Thorin
So you're after a Linux VPS? It's just that you mention MS SQL. Check out http://www.lowendbox.com/ for VPS providers. Personally I have a couple of VPS with http://www.Qualityservers.co.uk and have been very happy with them. In particular their "Eliminator" deal is hard to beat http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/qualityservers-4-600mb-openvz-vps-in-us-or-uk-2/
Martin J
Thorin, do you have anything on the QualityServers 'Eliminator' package (to look at/test)? If so, and you choose a distro on their signup page, I'm assuming you get complete/root control over the VPS (via SSH, rather than some fudged control panel job)? I currently have a free dedicated box from a friend who runs his own ISP, but my wife may need hosting for her new company so I'm looking around for her... Jellybean
http://www.Godaddy.com ; excellent value for money you even get SQL db in the most basic package and all for very cheap, running my friend site on it last 10 months with zero issues, very comprehensive and easy to use account tools My other collegue in work recommeneded it to me and is using it last few years

I don't really have anything I could show you right now, I've only just rebuilt it with Debian 6 and all it has right now is Apache and php installed. I have a 128MB VPS with them too which just runs some proxy server and web front end caching stuff. The control panel allows you to select from a list of OS versions (more than you get on the order page) and it will auto re-build it for you. You get full SSH access as well as a virtual lights-out console type thing in case you really stuff things up. Their servers are in Manchester BTW. Martin J
Interesting, thanks. Is Slackware an OS choice? Seems like quite a bit for what little money it is. I wonder how their uptimes are :x
