J-Spec Injector Upgrade

Thorin

Recommended Posts

Hi all (Yes Syed I've finally joined, you can stop pestering me on Supraforums now! ;)),

I bought a black '95 6-speed TT from JIC in surrey just before christmas, mods so far include HKS cat back exhaust, HKS intake, UK spec brakes all round, and some very nice 18" wheels. It's hopefully very soon about to be de-catted plus FCD and boost controller (need to get some more overtime in first!). I was just wondering at what point would I need to be upgrading the j-spec's piffling little fuel injectors? Also anything else I need to be wary of on J-specs (I am aware of the problems on some j-specs after removing both cats before someone mentions that ;))? I pretty much memorised most of mkiv.com in the two long weeks I was waiting for the car to be registered (did anyone else notice that the first two weeks in december seemed to last for months?) but I know that is mainly for the US spec car so was just wondering if theres anything I ought to look out for on j-specs.

   Michael.

P.S. Oh have a look here http://www.darkstar.karoo.net/ I just cobbled this together in a couple of minutes. I'm going to redo a proper website when (and if) I can be arsed.

Me and Ian are looking at shipping some in soon (full kit for 550cc with the resistor pack and rail).

We maybe able to get a cheaper deal if more people join in.

The 440's are high resistance injectors and not really capable of much. If you plan on running above stock boost and a fuel controller in the near future might be worth while upgrading now.

Cheers

Yep - 550cc injectors, fuel rail, resistor pack, and fuel pump, all from US-spec stock.  A quite reasonable price all told (about £500) but that's without a) import tax, and b) a discount due to combined shipping.

However, we need a couple of paydays before doing it :)

The preliminary plan is that these will fuel perfectly OK for hybrids twins running 1.5bar.  You would only need bigger injectors than this for a big single or some really hatstand setup.

If you read my original post you'll see that I pointed out that I have UK spec brakes all round ;) I ain't upgrading them again! (just yet anyway). So would the general concensus be that I am "ok" at BPU level but ought to be thinking of upgrading them if I plan to go higher?

Guest Mycroft

You'll have to excuse me Thorin, I'm breaking this brain in for the Village Idiot, and by the look of things, he'll be very pleased with it.

Anyway, shock news as researched by Alex, the resistor pack is about 35 quid bought brand new from Toyota UK!  Wow - and the injectors are £70 each.  That's not bad when you consider that you are getting new instead of 2nd hand, you don't need to flow test them (more £££s) as they are new (or do you?  Answers on a post below, hopefully!) and there is no shipping.

All in all, it seems you can get brand new here with no shipping delay for the same as 2nd hand from the States.  Result.

More news as and when.

OK - more news, as it's when now.  Or something.

The injector resistor pack from Jay Marks is $126.14, so I suspect Alex may have dropped a clanger on the UK price info...  :)

The rest of the prices are:

Injector - $85.33

Fuel pump - $189.70

I've had a look at the TRLPerformance webpage detailing the swap - it mentions automotive 7-way connectors, do we need these if we are getting the 'official' resistor pack?  And Pete, can you reassure us that the 550cc injectors fit into the J-spec fuel rail?  Otherwise that's an extra $84.15 (Jay Marks didn't know if they would fit)

The shipping was quoted to me at approx $40 for one 'upgrade set' as it were.  I don't know if that goes up if more stuff is ordered.

All in, then, that's near enough £600.  Does anyone know what Customs can stonk an order like this for?

I may be ordering all this stuff at the end of March, one way or another, if anyone is interested (I know Alex is) in getting anything as well.  I don't know what value a group buy would have, as we won't get any more discount (retail total is £761 before shipping!)...

My Whiteline suspension came in around 22% of the value of the goods and the shipping costs :(     I don't see why it shouldn't be same for your stuff.

I wonder how easy it is going to be to get electronic bits past airport security. Imagine their shock when they scan a suitcase to find it full of electronics and large 'bullet' shaped objects...US customs were candidates for the SS before Sept 11th, hate to think what they are like now.
